Well, it sounds like a plot of a movie, in the likes of "The Pursuit of Happyness".
The story has some minor character development, but it shows us the protagonist in a fair and understandable way. It doesn't spasm us with flashbacks or his mistakes, it shows us all we need to know, and the rest is up for the following verses. It really has that "follow your dreams" and overcoming elements, that may feel cliché, but it's that type of cliché that keeps us interested in the story. It has a very sustainable plot, where it tells all we need to know about our character in a simple, yet fresh way, and shows them reaching the end goal. It gives that relief of seeing them succeed, like in The Pursuit of Happyness.
But it has its errors. There is some minor abbreviated timeline, such as the death of the parents and the birth of Jimmy; and it has this "follow your dreams" plot, which if done incorrectly, makes the story bland. But this plot was done efficiently and in a simple, yet fresh way.
I give this story a 8,3/10.
I really liked this story. Keep it up! :3
