And fire in the sky.
Ok, no, not really...just had to make a pun with that song due to the title of the pic :p
ANYWAYS...I rather like this picture. Not sure if it's the same heron from the other pic in my gallery. As I stated before, most times I go to the Edmonds waterfront, there is a heron there and it usually lets me get rather close, was probabily about 40 feet away in this pic...couldn't get any closer without walking into the water :)
The trick is to take a few pics, take a step closer, take some more, then another step...lets the bird get used to the sound of the camera so it's not startled when you take a pic while closer.

Its really quite amazing that at that range the birds pick up on the shutter release of your camera, I know that I found it quite stunning while taking pictures of a presentation from that of Sarvey a few years ago. I was on the far side of the room, very back of the large classroom, and the owl and several of the other birds locked onto my lens and really watched close every time I focused, and fired for the shot.

Most birds, espicially owls, have very good hearing. I also use an SLR, which is much louder due to the sound of the reflex mirror slapping up and the shutter clicking open and closed. Not as bad as my film SLR, which also has the sound of the motor to advance the film.
Also, sent you a note about the woman in the pic.
