They were found guilty, but they did appeal. The one who framed them knew how to shake the legal system, but not the ilegal system, that's where mr. Big's influences came in. In the first comic, we see how they're found not guilty, but that's one year later. What we're showing here is Judy and Nick's adventures during that year.
Well, he helped Judy, so therefore it's nice if he's a good guy. That makes the world all black and white which is what we like. We can forget he nearly killed Judy... and Nick... oh and Duke... did I miss anyone? A criminal Judy doesn't immediately arrest raises worrying questions.
