[[NOT MY ART]]A Portrait of Royalty
"I can't believe you're about to officially be made king of Firaak," Danathius mused aloud as he stood beside the towering red dragon. Astrix snorted, orange eyes carefully watching the numerous staff of the castle as they sped about its confines; they were busy cleaning every spot of the castle, making sure that it would be immaculate for the upcoming coronation.
"It doesn't feel any different. At least, no different than those five hundred odd years I spent as father's proxy, anyway," Astrix rumbled thoughtfully, "aside from, you know, going from enforcing his will to being able to pass my own laws and dramatically overhaul our entire way of living." Danathius winced -- he could hear the subtle, panicked undertones in Astrix's speech, and the little mage moved closer, leaning himself into one of the red's large forepaws. He carefully and slowly stroked over one of the large, scaled digits, if only to help sooth the love of his life. Astrix seemed to appreciate the gesture, and the red dragon did seem to relax a little.
"You're sure you want to do this? Your father abolished human slavery before passing the crown onto you. Dragons are slow to adopt change. If we propose too many changes too quickly, we may cause a lot of unrest," Danathius spoke carefully. The two had argued about this point before, and Danathius didn't want to add more stress onto the towering mountain of problems no doubt already pressuring the king-to-be.
"We have to act quickly, while the draconic population is still processing the first change my father made. You are right -- dragons are slow to adapt. But we can handle a pawful of changes here and there, as long as they are spread out over a longer period of time. I've no idea how you humans deal with so much so frequently. It's a wonder your cute heads don't explode," Astrix commented with a smirk. Danathius smiled, glad to see that Astrix had calmed enough to regain his quick wit and guile.
"I should hope that mine is the only head you think cute, Your Royal Highness, otherwise," Danathius jokingly threatened, "I may have to imprison the king for treason." Astrix's smirk faltered, and Danathius immediately realized the weight of what he had said. He cursed under his and winced, shaking his head. "Sorry, I didn't mean to--"
"It's alright, Danathius," Astrix said quickly, cutting the mage off, "I've had a long time to process my mother's murder. I think...I'm finally at peace with it. Talking with father helped, of course."
"What...exactly did you say to Igmas," the question left the human's lips before he could silence himself -- Danathius's mother, too, had been murdered. And when he finally confronted the dragon who had done it, he poured all of his rage into his magic and his spells. Aurimvox, the red dragon who had killed his parents, killed everyone in his home town of Khar, didn't fight back. He took every spell Danathius slung at him wordlessly, and when the mage's anger and magic finally exhausted, he moved over to talk to the man. To come to an understanding with the human whose life he had so dramatically altered. Through their discussions, Danathius learned just how much Aurimvox had loved his mother Rhaldia, and just how much Rhaldia had hurt Aurimvox by leaving the clan without saying a word to him.
"I said I forgave him. Nothing more, nothing less. I've had a lot of time to think, Danathius," Astrix turned his great head toward the mage and peered down at the man, "betrayal of the heart can bring out the worst in an individual. I could see the regret in his eyes, and that's enough for me. Besides, I finally learned why he left me alone for so long. He was afraid of my rejection. Mine. I never thought he even cared. Gods, what a fool I was."
Danathius opened his mouth to reply, but no words of wisdom or advice sprang to his mind. Silently, he patted Astrix's forepaw before planting a kiss on it. The great red smiled, and leaned his muzzle down close to the mage. He pressed his snout into the human, and nudged him carefully and lovingly.
"So don't even think of breaking my heart, little morsel, or else," Astrix whispered, and snapped his teeth gently at Danathius; the sound of clacking enamel made Danathius's eyes grow wide, but his cheeks flushed red before he gave a compliant nod and buried his face into Astrix's snout.
"Come now, though -- I have to get my portrait painted for my coronation," the great red let out a heavy sigh.
"Oh? On whose authority," Danathius asked with a smirk. He had a good idea of whom dictated the command, but he would rather let Astrix explain than postulate.
"My father's, of course," Astrix reached toward Danathius and gently plucked the mage up from the ground before depositing the boy on top of his head, between his ebony horns, "but he didn't give more detailed instructions than that. So I've an idea for this portrait, and you're coming with me."
"Wonderful. I think, my dear Astrix, that this will truly be a work of art," the mage snickered, and settled down atop of the dragon's head.
So,
red-izak hosted a raffle on Twitter for interspecies couples, and she picked Danathius and Astrix as one of her winners! This piece turned out absolutely gorgeous, and I couldn't be happier with her depiction of them. <3 Please go check out her page and give her your love -- she definitely deserves it! Please be sure to view and favorite her submission here, too!
