One of my roommate's long standing requests was a wolf tail. He kept changing colors until he realized I have my nice soft fluffy black. But he wanted a WOLF tail, not a pencil-like fox tail (words of another roommate) like my prior ones.
That required actually cutting two parts of an S-shape. Except then the fur would flow wierdly for the same of the tail.
So... The pattern I found (and made a hard-copy of, I can remake this easily) calls for drawing the teardrop/s shape, then cutting the pattern at certain points... Then arranging the peices of the pattern on the fur so that the fur will always be running in the direction that particular piece goes.
In this case, the tail you see in this picture is made out of 8 distinct pieces of fabric, 4 for each side. You can't see the seams in this picture, partially because of the difficulty of showing such details in black fur like that with the equipment I've on hand, but mainly because you can't see then in person, either.
Even with the change in the flow of the fur, it's hard to pin down, without touching, where the seams are. Woo!
Now, this tail isn't finished, I still have to find a good material for the belt loops (I'm going to the fabric store to pick up some more black and some burgundy, and some other stuff), one I get the material home, I'm guessing maybe about an hour's worth of work before it's done.
I don't know how long it actually took me to make this tail, as I broke up working on it several times to do other things, but I started around noon yesterday, and finished it around 11pm. However, that time also included drawing up and cutting out the pattern, which is now already done and saved. I'm guessing that this took about 4 hours of work so far.
I need to get faster!

sugestion: dont make it an "S".. make a "J".. it'll hang better.. that extra curve part at the top, actualy pushes the bottom part between the legs.. http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3553182
for the belt loop, I just have the tail fur sewn at the top, with a hole for the belt.. if it's sew half-way decently, it's not gonna come out, and the fur it self isnt really gonna rip under it's own weight.. or you can use a folded over square of fake leather, sewn into the top of the tail
Actually, that's my next non-tail project. I could use pointers ont hat...
Tried making a pattern with my own hand, and each time I've tried it the fingers get too tight, and that's when the wrist and sleeve are large enough for me to get through.
I know I'm not making them large enough, but I thought that LAST time when it turned out too tiny...

paws are really a pain, especialy if you dont want a 3 or 4 fingered "glove" and you want a proper 5 fingered paw, and have it some what glove fitting..

I DO use a "shadow" of my hand, then I add a half inch around that.. and between the fingers, I break from that 1/2 inch border, and go all the way down to there my fingers would normaly meet..

It's something I'm likely to try working on tonight, actually. After dinner, when there's room to work. Or I could get my lazy butt in gear and clear off my desk..
I'll see what I can do, get pictures up when it's done. Alas, I don't think I've any material good for the pads... I'll see what happens, though.

A more natural sway, you mean? Kinda so it swishes a bit?
There are a few methods, but since what I'm doing is effectively a stuffed animal... Not as much. I mean, I could probably pull it off, it's a matter of figuring out how.
The thing with a swaying wolf tail is that it would end up more straight than with the s or j curve... Mmm.
Looking at my tutorial/references, I could pull it off. I wouldn't even know how much it'd cost, looking at the one method I see. The method is specifically for cat tails, but I see no reason why it couldn't work for a larger and thicker tail.
I'm about to head out to get some groceries, I'll see if I can't ask to go a bit out of the way and end up at someplace that sells the chain I'd need.
