This was a 4 part voice leading project that I had to do as the final project for music 142. We were required to write a melody that was at least least two 4 measure phases long with a standard cadence at the end of each phrase, harmonize every beat, and use non harmonic passing tones, neighboring tones, anticipation tones, escape tones, and suspension tones at least once and required to have a tonal sequence. we also had to use the lyrics "O mater Dei mmento mei, Amen" (O Mother of God Remember me, Amen)
At the same time we have to avoid using any parallel 5ths or octaves or any chords with a 6/4 or 4/2 inversions.
I don't like the suspension I added at the end but I needed it to fulfill the requirements of the class. Listen for the key change to A minor and the secondary dom chords in the middle:)
Keep in mind this is crappy midi and I'm using cakewalk 2001 so there are a lot of limitations on what I can do.

Ah yes...I remember having to do 4 part vocal harmonies. Smartest music class I ever took.
Avoiding parallel 5ths and 8ves is standard, to keep the voices from sounding dependent. But wow...passing tones? Neighboring tones? Escape tones? AND Suspension tones? All in that short of a piece?
That's asking a bit much.

Well, the other style is counterpoint, technically you can have as few as two part harmonies and up to eight (and more, but realistically, once there are more than eight it starts to be counterpoint again) though four part is the most common in everything.
Counterpoint... I think you can go up to eighty different simultanious parts, though the largest 'successful' piece had 'only' forty different melodies playing at once (Spem In Alium). Pretty cool stuff, actually!
