I am pretty obviously trying to emulate a specific style of black&white photography for this one and the previous picture. And yes, it is heavily photo-referenced in order to get all the details right.

Well, wolves actually do have thin black lips, for example. They are not very pronounced and easily overlooked due to their color.
The whole oral anatomy of furries is a very loaded matter of debate, though overshadowed by the discussion of plantigrade and digitigrade legs.
This picture was born out of my own examination of the matter. I was very much on the fence and I am still not 100% decided, yet if the possibility of a furry kiss exists, there have to be lips of some kind. I know that other artists choose to draw some interlocking of the muzzles instead, which I think does not really count as a kiss at all.
So this picture was the result of my own decision: I want kisses and therefore there have to be lips of one kind or another.
I understand why some people might think otherwise.
