as the title implies, this sword is known as, "the king's reach" it was crafted and designed by my oc ezekial for
tsuki579 's character rosiel. this pic is actually a present i promised tsuki i would do during my audit shift last night. ^^
MECHANICAL EXPLANATION BELOW
it's current display is with the weapon, "open." closed it looks like a normal japanese longsword with the slight modifications. the two diagrams at the bottom right are a split view of the sword and an enlargement of the middle.
the outer crescents are a rail that the blade extends along. the dark inner ring is a spring fitting the inside of the halo of the crescents. the notch in the middle is an anchor near the rear of the lower blade. connected to it is a triple helix chain that runs threw the center of the sword and connects to the ring at it's rear. the chain can be drawn back by the ring to lock the blade back in place. the large ring is so both feet and near objects. the chain is also used for grappling, disarming, and as a distraction with the bright red feather. the darker blade is a stronger metal to support the guide rail well the the lower blade is a lighter metal to reduce the disruption in the swing releasing the blade causes.
the hand guard is pushed outward to trigger the release.it is not pulled inward to prevent the accidental release when guarding. this weapon is designed for feint style fighting and making a close call a killing blow.

*sigh* i really do need to draw this closed some time. ^^;
i tried to explain it in the description, but i have had a lot of people not see what i meant from it. this is the extended version, but it collapses down into a normal-ish looking sword. it extends like that to surprise enemies mid swing. ^^ when the blade is, "closed" the ring on the chain at the butt of it is used as the counter wait in the other hand. it is also used for disarming and spin control. ^^

ahhh, i see what you mean about how single handing this would be plenty heavy if it was wielded like a katana. this is a weapon more based on it's weight and power though when it comes to a full swing. when it comes to fine manipulation, the stance would be with the chain taught and compensating for a lot of it via the other hand.
another issue is the power of the spring strike. if it were longer, the momentum of the swing before the spring stab would be no where near as powerful.
this is primarily a defensive sword with the way i designed it and how i am thinking it should be used. i know it's general strikes would be ornate and easy to trip up if you knew them. the need to balance it with the chain is reason enough for that. at the same time though, the advantage of it's surprise makes it a formidable weapon none the less in my book. ^^
