I feel like you should take the shine out of their eyes - it's too 'disney animal'ish, which is all soul and innocence.

Also, they have hints of smiles at the corners of their lips. I would make them pretending to be smiling but actually have frowns or bland corners, belying that though they look good, what's inside is dead and rotten.
