Here the Quarter per Quarter description of the game between Nashville and Montreal:
Quarter 1
Nashville wins the coin toss, and elects to defer. Montreal decides to open the game with a heavy emphasis on the run game, rushing three straight times. Unfortunately, all three attempts manage a total of five yards. Nashville actually manages a first down on their opening series, but running back Dallas Larkin gets stuffed at the line of scrimmage on third and 2, and they have to punt as well. The first big play of the game comes about halfway through the first quarter. On 2nd and 9, Tyron Appleby gets a big chunk play with a 21 yard pass down the middle to Ralph Ellison. It doesn’t lead to anything, however, as Appleby gets sacked and fumbles the ball. One of the linesfurs jumps on it to prevent the turnover, but that leaves them with a 3rd and 17.
The next two series don’t amount to much for either team. The Royal eventually punt from their own red zone. Norberto Martinez’s punt is short, giving the Tuts excellent field position. It looks like Montreal might get a stop, but Nashville manages to convert on two successive third down attempts. One play later, and Larkin rushes it in from six yards out to give Nashville the first lead of the game as the first quarter ends.
Quarter 2
The second quarter opens with a big 30 yard kickoff return for the Royal, courtesy of Kirklin Shields. On second down, Appleby drops back, looking for a target. The pocket starts to collapse, and he hauls back and fires, getting hit as he does so. The ball flies true, however, and Keonte Hughes climbs the ladder to catch it 41 yards downfield! On the next play, Tuts defensive end Deon Jean gets flagged for tripping, setting up first and goal. Appleby connects with Hughes once again for a 9 yard touchdown pass, and the game is tied.
Most of the rest of quarter bogs down into dink and dunk offense for both sides. There isn’t another play of ten yards or more for almost ten minutes of game time. I hope the audience at home is a big fan of the art of punting. Montreal finally moves into Nashville territory with a 12 yard completion to running back Aaron Whitman with about three minutes remaining in the half. Rushes by Whitman and Ligustica get them to within the 25, but a false start pushes them back five yards. On 1st and 15, Appleby once more goes to Hughes, this time on an out route. The leopard catches the ball, spins around the safety, and jumps backwards into the end zone for his second score of the quarter. At the half, the score is MTL 14, NSH 7.
Quarter 3
The Tuts get the ball to start the second half, and come out looking to even up the game. Unfortunately, an unnecessary roughness penalty and a sack quickly put a damper on their halftime enthusiasm, and they have to punt on 4th and 27 from their own 1 yard line. Fortunately, it’s a good punt, 66 yards without a return. Unfortunately, Tyron Appleby has a cannon for an arm. On the first play of the drive, he hauls back and tosses it a good thirty yards downfield. Ralph Ellison catches the ball in stride, and he COULD. GO. ALL. THE. WAY! A 67 yard touchdown, and Montreal is up by 14.
Nashville goes three-and-out on its next possession, and Montreal gets the ball right back. On first down, Appleby attempts to pass to tight end Karl Kratt, but safety Anton Starnes jumps the route and picks him off! This is Nashville’s best field position since the first quarter. Kiedo Masquarde passes the ball over the middle to his own TE, John Woolridge, but it’s tipped at the line and INTERCEPTED RIGHT BACK BY MONTREAL! They march back down the field from their own red zone to first and goal in a 14 play drive that takes over nine minutes off the clock. It’s second and goal from the NSH 8, with 30 seconds left in the quarter. They run a play again, and Nashville’s defensive coordinator recognizes it from earlier. Appleby attempts to pass to Kratt again, and STARNES IS THERE AND GRABS THE BALL FOR THE SECOND TIME THIS QUARTER! With three quarters in the books, the score is MTL 21, NSH 7.
Quarter 4
Unfortunately, the good feelings about the interception don’t last long for the Tuts. They net zero yards on three plays, and have to punt the ball right back to Montreal. Once again it’s a good, deep punt by Odis Cantrell, and once again it doesn’t seem to matter too much to the Royal. They head right back down into Nashville territory again, and though the Tuts actually manage to get a stop on third down, they’re still well within field goal range. Martinez kicks it through the uprights, and it’s a three-score game with nine minutes to play. After the play, Appleby is seen talking to the coach, and backup Raoul Fernandez is taking warm-up throws. Looks like he’s done for the night with the game firmly in hand.
Wait, is the record skipping, or did we just rewind the game? Nashville goes three and out again, Cantrell has another beauty of a punt, pinning the Royal at their own 2 yard line. In an almost exact duplicate of their big play in the second quarter, Fernandez gets the ball out of his hands as he’s being taken down for the sack and potential safety. Hughes once again catches it in double coverage, for a 44 yard gain! From there, Montreal clearly isn’t in any hurry. They keep the ball on the ground and run the clock down, finally scoring a game-sealing touchdown on a four-yard Aaron Whitman rush just after the two-minute warning. The final score is Montreal 31, Nashville 7, and Montreal is headed to their first Furbowl!
