I think people in high school and middle will get this. But for those who don't understand it, i'll explain:
When I was attending elementary school, students we not allowed to chew gum but some student got away with it and some got in trouble. When I moved up to middle school (which is HELL when I attended), it was the same. But during my 6th grade year (first year in middle school), the school staff enforced the rule of chewing gum. And posted signs (really paper) that said, "Gum-Free Zone" with a picture of gum crossed out. If students got caught chewing, they'll receive a detention or worse, depending on their disobedience/record. A few of my classes allowed students to chew gum but they were not allowed to pop bubbles in class because it will turn into a distraction to other students with their work. But anyway, in high school, things were a bit easier. Student were allowed to chew gum except in certain class rooms with certain teachers. Most foreign language courses will not allow gum chewing (like in my Spanish 1 and 2 classes) but regular electives and courses will allow it.
When I'm usually in class, students will often chew gum and when they don't have any on them, they will usually ask students around them saying, "You got gum?" or something like that. I was asked a lot but I replied that I do not have any on me. Sometimes when I'm with some friends, we would have some gum and we would share it (middle school). I would had some gum then but I wouldn't chew it in a class that I wasn't allowed to chew it in. I remembered A LOT of students getting in trouble for chewing gum in class and ended up getting detentions. I never got in trouble because I never chewed gum in class, not even at lunch! It was only in high school when I started to chew gum.
I rarely chew gum and I only chew it if I have any on me. But it's sad that everyone pretty much chews everyday at school. Students later on called it "School crack" because everyone was so addictive to it. In some PSATs, the teacher would have some gum when students take a 5 minute break. But the only flavor was peppermint/mint.
Well I've wasted enough time describing it so I'm going to have some now. =3
