Someone, somewhere, will take issue with the last panel. Even though it was a real test.

Um...
I hate to tell you this but Chernobyl didn't have a containment building at all. That's why in an earlier page I said "All reactors in the United States and most abroad".
It was housed in a warehouse. No containment whatsoever. So there's no "unless" here. And according to some math models, if Chernobyl had had a containment building, it would have held and there would have been no radioactive release.

I was always under the impression that Chernobyl had a half-finished containment structure that was aborted due to funding issues.
Additionally, I think the world needs more people to read this... or at least the US needs it... I'm curious, are you a nuclear engineer trying to educate people? Or were you just curious and looked stuff up?

I'm going to school for nuclear power plant operations, specifically radiation protection. And I've worked in the industry, two outages and a bit of inhouse training.
As for the state of Chernobyl's containment, what I was told in class is that it was functionally kept in a warehouse structure because the RBMK1000 design was so mind-bogglingly huge that putting a containment over it almost wasn't feasible.
And actually I showed the first few pages of this to one of my teachers and he said "when it's done, contact me, I may know some people who would be interested in publishing it."

No idea if it'll actually make print but I honestly do like the idea. I think it's straightforward enough that most people could get it and this country needs some nuclear education.
Hey, be proud of that, there aren't very many swimming pool reactors around anymore! As to engineers... heh. I did some Operations training and their line was "freaking engineers." Would you like to hear the engineer story I got told?
