Threw this together after coming across a rather obscure Irish folktale called "Morraha" - it's fairly long and convoluted, and pretty vague (I suspect it's very roughly translated from Irish) but the basic premise is that the hero's wife breaks a branch off a magic tree and has fun transforming her husband into different animals for dubious purposes.
After a few rounds of this when he's turned into a wolf, he runs off and spends a few good years as the guard dog to a royal baby who he rescues and helps him get his human form back.
What's interesting to me though, is by the end of the story, the hero is still back with the same wife who put him through it all - he keeps repeating "Here she is herself to say it's true." So either it's a sign of Irish Catholic resistance to divorce, or maybe he secretly enjoys transforming... as I said, details are vague.
Happy Saint Patrick's Day
