I think ID made them so annoying so they'd be more satisfying to blast away 83.
And excellent rendering of them you've got there :). Kind of reminds me of concept artwork.

Always annoying :) Second only to those... blob-things. Strange how Quake's enemies never became as iconic as Doom's were, but I certainly recognized this immediately from the thumbnail.

My guess is because the Quake enemies have a very brownish colour scheme, compared to the colourful legions of the Doom hellmonsters.

Yes, it was a bit of a victim of the increasingly brown colour palette for games that were trying to have a gritty realistic feel (perhaps even the start of the trend?) - and what wasn't brown was blue-brown. Looking at it now, Doom is a positive rainbow explosion by comparison :)
