Nearly ten years ago I agreed to pencil a story for a fan named Al Fishbeck. He'd created the characters and wrote a number of stories, and wished to publish them himself in comic format. But Al didn't draw well enough. His solution was to pay other artists that he liked. One story was illustrated by Terrie Smith, and I have never seen it. This is the one I illustrated, the story that gets Al's Mayhem County General Hospital series underway.
After penciling 13 pages I was worn out. I suggested Al pay another Canadian artist named Adrian Kleinbergen to do the inking. That worked out pretty well, as Adrian is very adaptable. But when the pages were finally turned in... nothing happened. Neither Adrian nor I have heard from Al since. The material has never been published or widely seen.
Adrian and I talked about this last night, and we agreed to try posting the pages on-line. In a way, I'd rather not. But the work was well done and deserves an audience. Isn't ten years long enough?
So I'm going to post one page every day or two. So that you can compare them, I'll post both the inked and penciled version.

I really hate it when this happens. All that work for nothing, because someone suddenly can't be bothered to finish what he started (not a reference to you or Adrian, obviously).
It's only recently that artists drawing in people's slackbooks have started asking that they be sent copies of their work - when I think of the vast galleries of art that are effectively locked away and in some cases thrown away as trash, my hair sweats.

I have always asked for xeroxs when doing sketchbooks. Most times I get them... but now and then I wonder what I never saw again...
I worried about it enough that during the last couple of furry cons I went to, I quickly traced the art onto a loose sheet of paper to take home.

After a couple of such incidents, I made a habit of photographing any pics I do at conventions, as 'insurance'. The resulting image may not be ideal compared to a scan, but at least I can digitally trace the photo and make a full-color piece out of it later.
