Our story began when David Bruder, scion to a renowned family of scientists and philanthropists, traveled to Israel in order to train in self-defense and hand-to-hand combat from the Israeli Defense Force. David’s IDF instructor was a young woman in her twenties named Tovah, a Bukharan Jew who immigrated with her family in the mid-90s through Israel’s Law of Return. You see, as inheritors of the global defense company Native Altars, the Bruder family has always needed such training. The man who founded the company and David’s grandfather, Dr. Klaus Bruder, also helped establish a national confederation of monster hunters in the wake of the second World War. While David’s family flourished more in business and the sciences, the young cat still took it upon himself to endure mixed martial arts training much like his father and grandfather had before him.

Years later, David and Tovah fell in love, married and soon thereafter moved into a brownstone house on Dearborn Street along downtown Chicago’s Gold Coast. The couple had three children: Rainier “Rainn”, Rainy and Baron. However, it soon became apparent that, among their children, Rainy, David’s only daughter, was best suited to pursue a path in Blutmond, the national confederation of monster hunters, while her older brother Rainn promptly followed their father’s footsteps in Native Altars. Her early years were spent studying judo and taekwondo, though later in adolescence, Rainy’s mother supervised her daughter’s training in Krav Maga and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Studying martial arts helped the Siamese cat focus and channel her aggression in such ways as to be brutally effective in controlling the flow of combat. Not only that, but as an auspicious applicant of highborn status, agents of Blutmond administered small doses of the experimental compound Phlegethon yearly to strengthen Rainy’s physical attributes as a burgeoning monster hunter.

While Rainy and her older brother Rainn often clashed, the Siamese conversely found herself indisputably protective of her more perceptive and insightful younger brother, Baron. Although she and Baron honestly bonded over time, this sort of profoundly personal connection was not indicative of how she normally formed and maintained relationships within the family. Whereas her parents and both brothers were openly warm, sociable and affectionate, Rainy Bruder has always been regarded as distinctly reserved, detached and unknowable. One could argue that certain aspects of this consistent pattern of reticence was partly the result of Rainy’s reluctance to live her life as openly gay. Although both her parents adhere to Conservative Judaism, neither have given Rainy much reason to suspect she’d find little in the way acceptance. That said, Rainy’s more reserved nature didn’t hinder the Siamese’s capacity to form friendships in school.

At fourteen, she was enrolled into Perihelion, a prestigious academy in Des Moines where those born into hunting clans could find solidarity with their peers. Four years later, the ruling body of Blutmond, The Cognoscenti, deemed Rainy and her associate Varik Rausch worthy of commanding Hadeanstar, a paramilitary outfit comprised of preeminent young huntsmen with supernaturally enhanced attributes. In order to aid her in this endeavor, Blutmond infused Rainy with a mysterious substance known as the Water of Acheron from which the compound Phlegethon originated.

Equipped with a comprehensive education in martial arts and imbued with an inconceivable energy augmenting her physical aptitude, Rainy Bruder is more prepared than most. Even as she and her comrades in Hadeanstar attend school at the University of Iowa, they each help safeguard the home front from supernatural threats.
