A snappy title, I know. :>
Pago soared lazily over the blue waters of the Pacific ocean on white wings, gazing into the crystalline depths with sharp, intelligent eyes, searching out for tasty treats suitable to feed a hungry seabird.
Pago was a handsome bird, and most closely resembled a Herring Gull. He had a streamlined shape perfected by eons of evolution, and sleek, high aspect wings sporting grey and white plumage with speckled black wingtips, which swept back at a rakish angle. He also had webbed feet and a gently curved, yellow beak with a red spot at the tip of the lower mandible. His eyes were golden and shone with a cool intelligence as he scanned the ocean for food.
Unlike a typical gull, Pago had the unique distinction of being abnormally large for his species. His pinions stretched some twenty-five feet to either side, and he weighed 2,000 lbs. From a distance he could easily be mistaken for a small plane.
Such a size gave him a nearly insatiable appetite for prey, the bigger and easier to swallow, the better. He preferred slippery food whenever possible such as dolphins, large fish, small sharks, and the occasional hairless human tourist for they were easiest to tip back into his hungry gullet, and filled his crop nicely once swallowed. After all, every day, this stretchy chasam needed to consume over 400 lbs of food just to keep him in the air, and if possible he'd always take the opportunity to eat more than this. Good meals were always scarce and far between, at least from his perspective.
Luckily, this would seem not to be the case today. Some splashes in the waves below had caught his eye, and the giant gull banked slowly towards them, focusing intently on the surface.
Below him, his eyes picked out a few mermaids and mermen, hunting with spears and primitive nets to catch their own food. It was a rare, and welcome sight indeed. Slippery mermaids were a tasty and ideal prey to swallow whole! The greedy bird slobbered at the thought, and began descending towards his dinner!
The merfolk danced in a communal circle, swimming with a large net to encircle thrashing fish. They were so focused on their own hunt that they didn't even notice the giant avian descending upon them.
Pago fanned his tail feathers, spreading his feet below him to prepare for landing. He flared his wings, hovering over the surface for a second before splashing down right in the center of the mermaids' circle.
At first, the prey seemed shocked as the giant bird descended and landed right in the middle of their netting circle. Pago took full advantage of their split-second hesitation, lunging out and grabbing one with his beak, lifting her into the air by the midsection. Then he shook his head side to side to line his struggling food up with his ravenous bill. The weight of her well endowed breasts felt wonderful against his tongue as he tossed his head eagerly upwards, giving his beak a few savage jerks and pulling in with his tongue to get her inside as quickly as possible. With a few quick gloms, he crammed her into his mouth entirely and raised his head, wasting no time before gulping fast and greedily. His neck undulated as he swallowed, feathers pressing outwards as her bulge slipped down his throat with a soft squish, swallowed whole in a single gulp. Delicious!
A slight lump pushed itself out of the base of Pago's neck. The young mermaid felt wonderful wriggling and struggling inside his crop. His feathers ruffled happily, and shook his head to clear a string of drool hanging from his beak. His prey were still all around him!
With a scree of delight, he spun on paddle feet and picked another point from the circle, this time snatching a young merman up from the water. The screams of disgust and horror as his prey realized what was happening spurred the seabird to eat as fast as possible, or risk losing the rest of his food!
Quickly, he clacked his jaws forward with a fast and jerky motion, snapping up his food with three swift glomps of his beak, leaving nothing visible to the outside world but a silvery tail flopping listlessly to the side of his bill. The athletic merman's firm, tanned muscles felt warm and pleasurable against his tongue as he tilted his head back, relaxing the muscles in his neck. He closed his eyes in pleasure as he slurped the slippery, salty tail into his beak and swallowed, tossing his head back several times to maneuver the prey down his gullet. The long lump pressed it's way effortlessly down his slippery throat, pressing his feathers outwards as it went, before settling into his crop. Pago crooned with pleasure as his prey slipped downwards within him.
Even with two bodies squirming in his crop, his hunger barely diminished. He opened his beak, lunging for thirds, but instead bit nothing but woven fishing net. He let out an indignant squawk, fumbling to shake the net from his beak. The remaining merfolk had set a clever trap, and used this valuable time to sling their crude weapons at him. His considerable feather floof protected him from the worst of the onslaught, though, and it only served to irritate him further. Finally, he shook the net free. Of the original seven merfolk, four remained, just out of reach of his bill. Then, the last surfaced near him, hurling a spear in what was intended to be a killing blow. Pago's eyes were sharp though, and his avian reflexes were sharper. The spear hit the water harmlessly, deflected by a wing. Now his attacker was defenseless, a hunter turned prey. Pago spread his great pinions, and lunged forward, snatching him from the water.
He raised his head, grinning to himself as his prey tried feebly to push his jaws open. He held the merman by the belly, the hooked edge of his beak securing him in place. The tiny creature wore a look of fear and disgust on his face, likely from the sensation of Pago's moist breath gusting past him. He wouldn't have to endure it for long, however.
Pago slobbered ravenously around his food, tossing his burly prey skyward and opening his jaws wide. The toss was perfectly executed to line the prey up with his beak, and the fisherman turned warrior landed headfirst into those gaping jaws, sliding down the gull's tongue with a slick squelch. Pago relaxed his jaws, tilting his head back and pushing his long tongue beneath his prey, enjoying his salty, savory flavor with a cursory lick before using its natural hooked profile to pull his food inwards. A few small, but expertly executed jaw movements got the prey's slippery tail in entirely. The merman struggled gamely, pushing the crook of the gull's neck out a bit with his arms, but it was no use.
Pago opened his throat, tossed his head back and swallowed. His prey wriggled from within as his tongue shoved the lump of meat into his gullet. This one was a little bigger than the first two, and felt a bit tight going down. The seabird's neck bulged. Pago felt the prey slow within, a hard lump pressing a bulge against his feathers. He flapped his wings, angling upwards to gain a gravitational advantage, and swallowed several times in rapid succession. As he gulped, he moved his head and neck rhythmically, pushing his prey down his gullet with a slimy squish...squish-squish-squish!
After a moment, this larger food item slipped into his crop with a thick squelch. Finally, some of the ach of hunger was sated. Yet still, a ravenous desire for more consumed him. By now, his prey had distanced themselves in an attempt to escape their comrades’ fate.
Pago spread his wings, flapping a few times to clear the water, pursuing with great speed. The mermaids were good prey for a bird like him, for unlike fish and dolphins, they needed to stay near the surface to breathe. Their human-like tendencies limited their time underwater to no more than a minute or two. Precious little time to travel far enough to evade the eyes of a hungry seagull. The remaining four looked appetizing indeed, three shapely females and one, somewhat underfed looking male. They'd easily slide down his gullet, provided his crop would have space to accommodate them all. Pago was unsure of this fact, but it wasn't about to stop him from trying.
He grabbed the last merman first; his skinny arms and slender tail would pose no challenge to his gullet, and he intended to bolt down as many of them as possible as quickly as possible to reduce the chance of them escaping. He snapped up his struggling food with four clomps of his bill, pressing his tongue forward, and then pulling back as he worked his jaws, jerking them forwards, and then back. The motion felt natural, and washed the taste of his prey over his tongue, lubricating the him a bath of thick avian saliva in the process.
Pago raised his prey to the air, using his tongue to get the tail into his mouth, and pointed his beak at the sky. Once again, he relaxed the muscles in his throat, allowing his prey to slip inside. He smiled, feathers ruffling at the sensation of that long body sliding over his tongue, and then effortlessly into his eager gullet. Tilting his head back, he swallowed blissfully, closing his eyes in ecstasy as he gulped the prey down effortlessly. A slight thickening in the profile of his throat was visible for a moment as the lump pressed beneath his feathers, squelched through his curved neck in a single gulp! The skinny merman curled up inside his crop. Now essentially filled, he felt a relaxation within him followed by a gentle, gurgling squelch, the weight in his neck sliding slowly deeper, as a few of his guests were introduced to his empty belly. Oh, how they slid down so nicely! Pago shivered, reveling in the pleasant sensation.
Then, he returned his attention to the three remaining mermaids. He'd saved them for last, for they were more "full bodied" than the rest of them. This approach had two benefits. Firstly, the curvy prey were less likely to evade his hungry beak if he had to chase them with the weight of four others already inside of him, and secondly, they would take more effort, and hence a bit more time to swallow. Had he eaten them first, their fitter counterparts may have had enough time to escape. Luckily, this was not the case, and now they stewed inside of him, squirming slimily against each other in a bath of digestive juices and slime inside a dark, stretchy, avian belly.
The three mermaids gazed at him with terror in their eyes as Pago paddled towards them, eyes glazed over with greed. He imagined how it would feel to have all three of them in his crop, stuffed to the fullest! He could eat as many as he wanted!
As Pago approached, the mermaids backpedaled, and then submerged themselves, greenish silvery tails flashing in the sun before slipping beneath the waves. Pago spread his wings and lunged at the closest of them, just grabbing her tail before she could swim out of reach!
The gull lifted his prize into the air, feeling her weight in his beak as he hoisted her upside down from the water. With a practiced flip of his beak, he swung her by the tail, snapping his jaws forwards as she fell downwards into his hungry beak. Water droplets flew in an arc. The practiced toss had lined the mermaid up with his gullet perfectly, allowing her to slide in tail first against his slippery tongue. He'd have preferred to swallow her head first, but in a fit of overwhelming greed, all he could think about was pushing her down his throat as quickly as possible!
He raised his head and opened his jaws wide, jerking his neck sharply a few times to cram her the rest of the way into his mouth. The weight of warm meat sliding lusciously across his tongue brought pleasure beyond comparison. He slobbered copiously, drooling around the meat filling his beak. His jaw jacking, a fast greedy hulch...hulch-hulch-hulchhulch! type motion, worked well to cram her rump past his beak. He closed his eyes, enjoying the weight of live meat on his tongue, drooling happily. Instinct urged him to swallow his food, and he acquiesced happily, tossing his head back and gulping hard. His neck undulated, the squelch of slick flesh squeezing inwards just audible beneath white feathers. His prey grabbed at his beak with stubby fingers, desperately trying to stop herself from slipping into his feathered neck, but a quick slurp cleared her prying hands from their tentative finger hold on the edges of his jaws, and a second jerky swallow hid them entirely from view as her plump body squeezed through the opening of his throat. Pago used his naturally hooked tongue to pull and press her inwards, squishing it inwards and upwards against his palate, relaxing to allow his pushes to force her into his throat.
The wriggling outline of the struggling mermaid pressed tightly down the curve of Pago's throat, distending his feathers as it went. He keened happily to himself, feathers ruffling in pleasure at the tight sensation of her pudge pressing outwards against him. He felt his prey slow, and then become lodged in his gullet, a wiggling bulge briefly pushing its way out as she pressed her hands against the inside of his neck. Pago spread his wings, and swallowed again, once, twice, three times, throat squishing inwards time with the undulating movement of his head and neck. The lump appeared almost to bounce slightly, for a moment, but slipped downwards a bit with each swallow, moving with soft squishing sounds before finally squeezing tightly into his crop. A lump swelled out in the base of his neck as he stretched to take her in entirely.
Pago squeaked happily at the feeling of his distended neck, slurping his tongue along the edge of his beak in appreciation. Even with five merfolk pressed inside him like sardines, he wanted more. The feeling of them moving around inside of him, slapping and wiggling against themselves and the inside of his gut, (even the earlier ones still moved a bit deep in the acidic confines of his belly) was delightful, yet his seagull's appetite was sure his crop could still stretch to fit more. And if it couldn't, he'd probably still try to cram the prey down anyways.
There were two mermaids left.
Looking around, Pago spotted a telltale swirl in the water. They'd be out of breath any minute now and would have to surface. The gull eyed his next target with eager anticipation, golden eyes focusing on the water with intense concentration, wings and beak poised to strike.
Then, a feminine head broke the surface, and was promptly engulfed by his ravenous beak. Pago stuffed himself down on her, shoving his own head deep underwater, forcing his beak over her boobs and belly in the process. As he surfaced, he flipped his jaws skywards, slurping up her tail with a flick of his tongue, flapping his wings and clacking his jaws forward to help snap his prey up, using her own considerable weight and inertia against her. Luckily for him, his jaws could naturally open to several times their normal size, and were just able to accommodate her ample body.
He lowered his head happily, pushing his slick, drooling tongue beneath her belly, slurping and licking and salivating copiously at her flavor as he pulled her in, working his jaws to get her tail inside as her head pressed firmly into his throat. His prey was now well lubricated in seagull spit for the trip down his gullet. Feeling her poised on the edge of his throat, he was overwhelmed with the desire to swallow, and did so as hard as he could, gulping several times in rapid succession. His feathers bulged grotesquely to either side as he forced her hips down, beak pointed skywards, skinny neck distended around her heft as he gulped her down with outstretched wings, swallowing her entirety with a few eager convulsions, whole, alive and wriggling!
Pago sighed happily as she filled him. He floated heavily in the water now, and his neck had a decidedly outbulged, thickened appearance, from all the living food stuffed inside. He belched, a gust of previously swallowed air leaving just a bit of space to stretch around the bodies already crammed tightly into the slimy, stretchy, steamy darkness of his stomach and crop.
He spread his wings, lunging after the last prey. This one was the fattest of them all, but he was determined to get her down with the rest of them. He felt heavy, and slow, but a quick lunge was all that was needed to catch his prey, who was sadly, even slower.
He raised her from the water by the mid-section, kicking and screaming in the grasp of his beak. He paid her struggles no mind, just like the others, instead focusing on feeding.
Pago tossed his beak skywards once more, gaping his bill wide as his prey slid in head first. He gave his head a jerk, and then another, relaxing his jaws as he worked her shoulders, and then her big breasts and the rest of her upper body in with skillful movements of his jaws and tongue, soaking her in his drool in the process. He treated her to a few aggressive downwards jerks of his head and neck, flapping his wings to aid that vertical stuffing motion, cramming her down whole!
He swallowed hard, again, and again, struggling with the weight of food already filling his neck. Gulp...gulp...gulp...gulp..gulp-gulp-gulp-gulp! Her rump posed a challenge, and he had to throw his whole body into the effort, jerking his throat violently in time with lunging and flapping his wings, gulping hard, over and over again to get that weighty posterior down. The mermaid pushed a long, full lump in his neck, distending his feathers outwards, her wriggling outline slapping back and forth audibly against the stretchy sides of his neck as she struggled against the impetus of his swallowing.
Finally, he managed to get her down his neck, her mass sliding slowly down with a sucking squelch of flesh sliding against flesh, although she didn't have far to go before bumping up against the food already in his crop. Really, she just sat in his throat, filling all the available space inside the gull's neck. In fact, her tail was still in Pago's mouth, resting on his tongue. He pushed this down too, swallowing hard and shaking his gullet to force the mermaid to curl inside his neck. This pushed out the feathers to either side as he got her body in entirely. He opened his eyes, panting from the effort of swallowing this last meal, and grinned happily, running his tongue against his beak and gulping down some of the extra saliva in his mouth leftover from feeding. He felt entirely stuffed. His neck and belly were filled so tight there was almost no room for his still living prey to move. His neck looked thick and almost lumpy, stuffed and stretched tight to capacity. He was also too heavy to fly now, having eaten over half his own weight in one sitting, but this didn't bother him. There were no predators to bother a bird of his size.
Pago moved his head back and forth, repositioning his swollen neck to allow the food to sit more comfortably inside, and resting his beak on the bulge. His stuffed belly gurgled and groaned, squishing and kneading its occupants, working with a slimy bath of digestive juices to reduce them to the raw energy needed to propel the gull's mighty body through the air. This meal had been utterly satisfying, and would constitute enough food to keep his belly busy for a day or more. The gull smiled to himself, ruffling his feathers and floating lazily on the surface of the water, tucking his head beneath his wing and taking a nap as he digested his meal.

Realistic and well written story (if Merfolk and Giant Seagulls were real of course)), and graphiclly illustrates how terrifying a such a mundane, french fry eating seashore denizen would be to humans if they were much, much, larger! Just wondering if the story actually ends with the bird eventually hurking up a big bone, hair and scale packed gastric pellet, or if its mighty gastric engine of a stomach pretty much grinds virtually all traces of this group to oblivion. Thanks for sharing! Birds are such great, yet underused predators, and some of the most realistic for swallowing relatively large prey whole and alive.
