Acutally, they ARE the same person. You see, Dr. Ivo Robotnik has always been Sonic's arch enemy. Sonic kept on giving him insults, like "Fat guy" or "He looks like an egg." In FACT! In Sonic AdventureDX, Sonic called Dr. Robotnik, "Eggman."
After Sonic Adenture DX, Dr. Robotnik adopted the name, "Eggman". Ever since, he's been known as Dr. Eggman.

So! >8I( You Think you Know Me Better than I Do Eehhh??? DI8< Well Little Miss Know it All, It Just so Happens The Me and that Fetid Dr. Eggman, ARE the Same Person! The ONLY technically of Us being Two Completely DIFFERENT people, is that Dr. Eggman Was NOT the Original Robotnik! In fact, He Came From and Alternate Dimension and Resembled ME from the SatAM Series! Now let me further Explain (Cation; This message WILL get long...You've brought this upon yourself sadly...)
Now Lets go back to the Beginning Shall we? >8I) I'll Explain My History as well as his, AND the True Reality of the entire situation! Now then I AM THE ORIGINAL ROBOTNIK! The Same Robotnik you saw in the first, second and third Sonic the Hedgehog Games, and all in between! Also the Same as when i appeared in AOSTH AND SatAM! now then, EGGMAN, showed up around the Era of SatAM. He was from another Dimension part of my own! In HIS world, he had conquered EVERYTHING, Including Capturing And Rbotisizing ALL of the Freedom Fighters! But this final Resort of Destroying the Freedom Fighters was His Ultimate Failure, They Became Even Stronger and Nearly Almost KILLED Him! In those Days he was Still known As Robotnik, now them in order to save his worthless Hide, He Then Robotisized Him Self! Thus Going by the New Name, Robo-Robotnik! Now, its STILL unknown even to Me just how he did it, But Some how, he managed to Enter MY Dimension! He still Looked Just like me, only now made of Shiny Metallic Chrome! He Dared Defy me and sought to Destroy me, with his Worthless Minions, the "Shadow" Swat bots, but they Proved Useless when compared to my Original Swat bot Army, and they were Decimated! What He did at that point i cant Entirely Remember but since After that Time, at some later point i Had created the Most powerful weapon Ever known as the Ultimate Annihilator, which was Meant to finally Destroy Sonic, which Also Unfortunately Proved My Own Final Defeat! Once i was finally Gone, Robo-Robotnik Simply Came Back and Finally Claimed all that i Had Rightfully Stolen! >8I( Thus Him and Sonic Began Fighting Once again, AND yet again Sonic had almost Completely Killed him, This Time in MY dimension! However, since Robo-Robotnik, was Merely a Robot to begin with, he could Very Easily Transfer his Mind into a New Robotic Body and Still Live on, Which is What he had Done, he Created a New body then Transferred his Mind into it, Then To complete the Process, He DE-Robotisized Himself and Changed his Name to Dr. Eggman! SO THERE YOU HAVE IT! EGGMAN AND I ARE NOT THE SAME PERSON!!!!! >8I( He is Me in a New body, from alternate Dimension, Very much like this Eggman Nega, guy! DIX< And THIS is why i HATE it when people Call me Dr. Eggman! >8I(
Now if you want to be MORE specific aside from Story Lines, lets get to Reality. the True sad fact is that Ever since the Sonic Games Started i was LWAYS known in Japan as Dr. Eggman. ALWAYS!!!! However, when the Game first came to the U.S.A, they Didn't Like the Name "Dr. Eggman". It sounds to Pathetic, so they called Me Dr. Ivo Robotnik! >8I) However, Japan Still Kept that Ridiculous Name, Eggman! I continued to be called Dr. Robotnik Up until the New Sonic Adventure game Came out on Sega Dream Cast, Where the World Had officialy Replaced me with that Horrid Dr. Eggman for good it would seem! <8I( Then Sonic X the Cartoon Came out and Dr. Eggman was the Villain and No longer Me! They Even Found a Way to Replace Scratch Grounder and Coconuts! DIX> and all the while, i was slowly being forgotten by the world, and the Dr. Eggman was getting all the Fame and Glory! <8I( But then, one Genius Person Decided to Make the first Youtube Poop from my Show and used me! >8ID and since then my Fans have been returning to their Senses that I, Dr. Julian Ivo Robotnik, and the ONLY Truest Most Rottenest Villain to Grace the Sonic Fandom! >8I) And Hopefully Sega will Also follow in their Fans steps and Give me a Job again! <8IP

I'll stick with the Japanese Eggman. He's always been Eggman to the Japanese. Sonic originated in Japan, which means you are Eggman having a severe identity crisis. More people would accept the fact that Eggman existed BEFORE Robotnik (Japanese-wise) and therefore, the Eggman we know and love come DID form from an alternate-dimension copy of the Americanised-Robotnik.
