If I am going to take doing commission artwork seriously in the future, I will need to learn to use hard-color.. meaning not coloring on the computer. Prismacolor markers were recommended to me, but they are 260 bucks for a decent set. If I want to do con-badges and such, I need to learn to use them, though.
So, not having money yet for a set, I bought the colors necessary (other than pink) to do a picture of Alps, since he doesn't have many colors. His seal and such were done in a gold pen which doesn't come out well in scanning. It looks better off the computer than on it, but I think this at least tells me that i am ready to sink the money into the markers. I need to learn this next step in art.
Anyone with tips that might be helpful for my beginner's endeavors into coloring with prismacolor?

A lot of artists seem to prefer digital work over traditional media for commissions these days, actually. It's a lot easier when commissioners decide to change things at the last minute. My mate tends to do inked hard sketches, then digitally colors them. Also, Copics seem to be more popular due to their ability to be refilled, but Prismas are cheaper in the short term, both seem to produce similar results though... also, apparently Prismas have issues with exploding during airtravel (something about the pressure changes)... or I may be thinking of a different brand.
Something you may want to look into are some specialty oil based color pencils for extra color on top of markers... I can't think of the brand name at the moment, I'll have to get back with you.
There's a lot of things you can try, but sadly they all cost a lot of money up front.

Naaaaah, we BARELY did anything during 1st year that required them. Too bad I didn't make it to 2nd year… though I learned plenty about what not to do. Such as, listening to my instructors when they say to use the pen tool in photoshop to trace photographs and images to use as our artwork. <_<
