I fail to understand this "us vs them" thing. I makes no sense. I served in the military. True, there was rivalry with other branches but, if shit hit the fan. You'd better believe, we'd unify to one coherent threat neutralizing force

I feel like most humans are like this. The only thing is a lack of anything large enough to unify everyone. And if something comes along that's *too* big, it turns to "every man for themselves".

The echo chambers and tribalism of social media are a dangerous place, especially when they preach diversity but have none of it themselves.

If joining a group of any sort comes with blocklists and predetermined hate towards entire other groups of people without without seeing or meeting said people and making up your own mind, it is a toxic place to be.

This is why I left all social media back around 2007-2008. My life got so much better and less depressing. It is better to just stay in contact with close friends than it is to try and satisfy the "twitterati" or facebook crowds.

I find a lot of groups these days are about hating someone else under the disguise as supporting another.
"You agreed with a point they made?! EXCOMMUNICATION!" It's literally the dark ages Catholics.
(Ironically studies show twitter/facebook followers are much more miserable.)

I think I joined twitter to keep people from claiming my name and doing weird shit with it. That's just about it; haven't even visited the site other than by accidentally clicking some link that sent me there in years.

I only use Facebook, and only for a few groups devoted to oddball subject matter I like. Say, pipe organs. And even in a group dedicated to discussing, say, one particular organ-builder that's been out of business since before WWII, there's an awful lot of current-day politics that creeps in. Or sometimes floods in. I'm glad I'm wary of wider social media.
