I've heard Italy is one of the top hotbeds. I'm not sure why it got so bad there. I do find it strange that it's so low-impact in younger age groups but so drastic for older age groups.

I worry about my roommate (~63) but at the same time I realize there's nothing that can be done. The world failed quite horribly at quarantine efforts and the US is very nonchalant towards the risks. :(

Here it spread like hell because Lombardy is the center of Italy 's working life, people' s concentration there is over the top. Try to limit contacts with other people if it happens. It's the only way to avoid getting sick...
