Hahaha I was given the same task/challenge... I won twice. I made a little mound of salt and set the egg up in it. Was told I couldn't do it that way. So I carefully popped the egg down on the table just enough to crack the shell but not the membrane inside the shell. Dad was sitting at the end of the table told my half sister she had to pay up twice because I had won the first time then changed the rules because I had won. Then I had won a second time. Dad tacked on a third payout to me for cheating. Sherry a was pissed. What can I say she was mean and spiteful towards me and my young sister.
This can be considered a metaphor for humanity:
Humans are the eggs. Our Creator tries to keep us upright in the way we should go, but without His guidance, we inevitably fall again and again. Only once we have died, our souls set and called back to Him, can we truly stay upright or fallen over and shattered.
- Sincerely, my morning musings.

Clever, very clever indeed.
Though chopping a cord of wood sounds more rewarding. It keeps the fire kindling, gives you material to build something else, and no matter what - you'll get a fine upper body workout from it and a good sweat afterwards.
Whereas with a dozen eggs? They smell, break easily and leave a quite a mess and spike your blood pressure (probably wasn't an issue for Wirewolf here though *chuckles*.)
Still, a great story, the imagery works especially well in symbolic or metaphorical interpretations, as touched on above. Its always nice to catch up with Toby too, his interactions with the various staff members of the Inn are among the best aspects of these stories.
P.S. I'm about two thirds of the way through with my story, even if work has meant less time for me to get on my a$$ and write. *smiles*

Just got back from a week out of town to find Wire is a bit of a sneak and (as Sirius mentioned), an egg-sucking old hound. And I thoroughly approve.
I'm sure being on a ship for weeks at a time encourages lots of sailors to entertain themselves in underhanded ways.
Nice tale, Ms. V. *hugs*
