Been thinking about this a while, I wanted to muse over the idea of Durg and Chiko "De-Mythicized", or adapted to a world lacking in dragons.
Had a few different ideas for each of them, and even then I could only boil Chiko down to two choices.
A komodo might have been a more obvious immediate choice for Durg, but I felt a crocodilian better facilitated retaining his hair and ears in the form of shaggy, droopy pond-moss.
Chiko's a bendy, hyperactive little shit, so I felt a ferret was perfect for a "domestic" Chiko situation.
However, he's also a striped, fearsome predator - so I thought that made a tiger the best "wild" alternative for him.

All of these are pretty good ideas! I think having Durg be a croc with moss for hair would be a nice choice. He's a goofball so the idea of him using moss and stuff for hair suits him xP
But Im sure everyone will still love Durg no matter what "De-Mythicized" form he takes ^^
Ive actually had similar thoughts to my own character Anubis. Since he's a Lucario some artists don't feel comfortable drawing them since are technically copyrighted.

It's an interesting exercise to practice, reverse-engineering your characters into more base concepts for broader adaptability.
On the topic of Poke'OCs, I actually did that with Bump, too! He used to be a Gengar, but while moving away from that, I retained his grinning, rude essence and he translated pretty well into a tubby Hyena!
That said, until Nintendo comes knocking on your door with brass knuckles and a cease and desist letter, there should be no shame in having a character based on a fandom or fictional species that particularly resonates with you!
Sergals and Avali, for example, are pretty commonplace and (mostly?) accepted now, and I'm even starting to see more adorable Undertale-based goat-monster OCs cropping up too.
My two cents: Love your inspiration, wear it on your sleeve! But when the time comes you wanna be flexible outside of it, have that jackal/dog/fox/anything version of your OC ready on the sidelines. They can stay EXTREMELY similar to the original version with some creativity in fur markings, accessories and general design and still be distinct enough for anyone with "uuuhh but pokemon..." hang-ups.
