As I understand it, whatever's the newest release of FF9 is probably the best way to play it, with all the tweaks and cheats and improved resolution and stuff. Full HD remake or not, I think it could use some kind of do-over to make combat not so much of a slog, and to give the second half of the cast more plot relevance.
Actually, the graphical quality suffered from the HD treatment, cause now everyone stands out far too much from the hand-drawn prerendered backgrounds, and the newest release somehow managed to have like a dozen bugs and glitches, some of them game-breaking, that the original never had.
