The town shuddered and shook, the footsteps of something massive causing the buildings to sway on their foundations, the oldest buildings, so frail and corroded, even cracking from the mere vibration, as those within stormed out to see the world beyond their homes, lit by the setting sun on the horizon, and also something else above.
Black fire, that was the only way they could described it, a flame so hot, it burned away even light, and it towered over them, not some inferno made from the heavens themselves on fire, but instead a creature, who seemed to be the flames given flesh and form, grinning down at their town, a terrible light within its maw and eyes as it gazed down at them.
A foot or hand, it was hard to tell with the way the creature was made, but regardless, a limb rose up into the sky, a low cloud, barely visible in the evening gloom, showed how high it was raised, as it was distorted by the appendage passing through it, becoming a halo that burned brightly for a moment, before the thing came down.
The sound, that horrible sound, as buildings were crushed beneath the weight, echoed from one horizon to the other, so loud that even as the screams began to fill the air, they could not compete. The people fled, and the creature above grinned, its eyes darting back and forth, knowing it would feed on their fear tonight, a feast fit for a devil king.
