Currently there are roadworks in my street. That was long overdue since the street was a mess of pot holes. Now that they removed the tarmac you can see why, the cobblestones from like 120 years ago when the street was build was just paved over at some point, probably after the war. They did a shit job back then, so water got in, and some cold winters blew holes into the tarmac. They never even bothert to fix this untill way into the 21th century.

They don't make roads like they used to.
And the second "they" I'm referring to are the Romans, now THOSE guys knew how to make roads that LASTED. There are Roman roads that have been around longer than my country!
Yeah yeah, You Europeans have wardrobes and dining tables older than my country.
Perhaps it's best to say that there are Roman roads older than Christ, and still perfectly fine for travel. Possibly not at Autobahn speeds, but back in the Roman days, it was impossible to travel faster than a horse at full gallop.
