Adoptables are character designs you can buy the rights to. You can change the hair style and gender if desired. But it is mandatory to keep the the colors and design placements.

Once you sell the rights you should sell adoptable-sketches at discount prices... this way you actually give people a reason to buy them.
To make it even more attractive I would setup a back story for each character and each one with a different personality and give them a name.
Imagine there's Sparky, a college age cougar. Then there's "Inferno", that has a very dark background, etc... etc... Each one with their personalities.
Once each of them is profiled and has a story, then the price should be somewhat higher but include "free" starter sketches where the adopted character will be displayed according to the buyers fantasies. After that, they'll be able to buy more sketches (10 or so) at a reduced discount price in comparison to the rest of your normal sketch-commission.
The point of it all is to have people and potential buyers to fall in love with the character just like they do with comic book characters. We've all seen some yiffy or clean furry comics and then thought about "Damm! I'd love to have some drawings with that character and mine..." or "I love that character and that personality, I'd like to make a story with it".

You'll want people to feel and say: "Hey! I've got one of Machina's characters! It's so awesome! "
And they should also be unique, that means that each one should be started from scratch and not be a copy with a different fur pattern, although characters from the same species are allowed.
Just imagine Adam Wan starting to sell out the rights for his Citras or Canine friends he usually draws... People would ger crazy about buying them!
Why?
Because they have a story, a profile, they are known and are unique.
You'll want to do the same with yours. Give them life and them give your customers the chance to get them drawn at low prices as gratitude for buying one.

That is a good idea. I know a lot of people who have trouble with character background stories and personalities. To buy a defined character is very good idea. I like how you think, even though I am not one for adoptable selling, I think anyone who is considering selling them should that your words into mind.
Sure thing, just send the $5 to biffyn[at]hotmail.com and I will send you the high res pic of him.
