I am making a tail. I am not sure I'm comfortable with the idea of full fursuiting, just because of the heat limiting my activity, but just a big floofy fox tail, that I can really get behind... ahem...
I'm partly copying the technique used by
bir who makes them on commission (check her page she has awesome pics), with advice from a few other friends and some hints from the wikihow article http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Cats-Tail . Its basically a yarn tail made by tying bits of yarn to a central, skeletal braid... and then brushing the living hell out of the yarn to rip it up and make it floofy. I think its taken me like 20 hours to get this far, and will probably take another 20 or 40 (its about 1/3 done, but i've been getting a little faster).
I wanted it to be 2.5 feet, but even using 4 foot long yarn strands for the braid it ended up only 2 feet... but with the length of the fluffy bits at the end I think it'll be about 2.25 feet or so, a decent compromise. And while its very fluffy and soft, it kinda has that sticky fibrous feel to it... my friend says I should iron it, or I wonder if putting some sort of oil through it would help soften it up?
UPDATE: I might want a fursuit. Also, I finished it but didn't straighten the floofs so they didn't come out right.... I've since given up making tails myself since
rux made me one and is so much better and more motivated to do them! Go check out her tails.

You must have done something totally different, because 4 times the length should have given you plenty on length xD
I think you may have cut it in the wrong place.. hm.. anyway, I think it looks lovely. XD Did you straighten it, though? It doesn't look like it, but I could be wrong. I'm not wearing my glasses right now. xD

Oh I just meant, the length went down slightly due to the braiding and tying knots on each end.... just from ~4 feet to ~2 feet or so, I was expecting it to go down a little obviously but just not that much (I probably lost 5 inches or so on each end just for the knots). So braiding just cost me 1/4 the length, knotting another 1/4. But the floofy bit at the end gave me another 5 inches or so so I'm right at my ideal length of 2.5 feet.
But thank you! The only straightening I did was brushing the living hell out of the yarn strands. It seems a very destructive process, much like whittling, but gets it nice and floofy

Hey Rand... Moregan commenting via Deni's account.... one thought I had for softening it up is to toss it in a dryer on low heat for just 5-10 mins with a dryer sheet. You can put it in, then let it toss then check it, toss it back in, and that should left soften it up.
But, very very cool thing. Might have to try this here!
I think oil would just make the yarn greasey and kinda... bleck. BTW.. I need to Watch you here on FA next time I log in on my account. :) *huggles*

Just to update, dryer did not work... but straightening with a hair straightener does!
rux makes tails now much better than I ever could have, & has dozens of them under her belt for experience by now... check out her page for examples.
