Now in the case of writing furry literature, many a times there isn't a very good reason to make the characters anthro.

What about to have characters be able to express themselves with ears/tails in text? Or just to have more comfortable epithets, 'the hyena' is much less awkward to read than 'the woman' in my opinion!

Well, at least in the short story I wrote, I found it unnecessary to have my characters as anthros. I found it more fun to give them animal-like qualities instead, such as by describing someone as "mousey" in appearance, or someone's great ability to climb as being cat-like, descriptions which certainly would have clashed if the characters were also anthropomorphic animals.
