The aardwolf inserted the key into the lock, and turned it, unlocking the door, and swingin it open.
There was no light in the cabin, but Conor’s nose twitched immediately. He smelled something, something that he knew very well. A smell he had often smelt, back in the war. LeFay reached for the light switch and flicked it, the lights illuminating the cabin before them.
Conor felt his heart twitch for a moment, and then, like an ice-cold paw, his training took over, stripping his face of all emotion, his eyes hardening up and becoming distant.
LeFay emitted a strangled yelp as his eyes set themselves on the sight before them.
The man was lying on his back, on his bunk, arms by his side. He was wearing spotted pyjamas, which were pulled down to his legs exposing his naked groin.
But that wasn’t the worst of it. His head was lying in a pool of blood and spinal fluids, having coloured the pillow and the white fur on his face crimson red. Through his right eye, pierced deep into his skull, a knife had been stabbed, a kitchen knife, heavy, slender.
He was dead.
Murdered.
