Okay, that secret project I was complaining about the other day? What I've got here is a first-run, pretty much. After recording it so many times, I've got what I feel is something decent enough to show. There are a lot of flaws still, some I might be able to get around and some I can't at the moment, but first some background.
My fiancee saw the thumbnail image on Ugliest Tattoos, which came with some Elton John parodying of its own, and made up what is the first three lines of the first/last chorus. I wrote the fourth line, and then she said, "You should sing the song for me." Fast forward to February or so, and I both had money and saw that Fox Amoore was offering piano cover commissions. So I hit him up. This is the result. (Notably, the piano is the only part of this song that doesn't suck.) Now, those flaws.
Tempo: What I was complaining about earlier. Near perfect at this point, the problems are all within phrases. I need to grab those notes and hold them!
My voice: The problem actually is that I can't sing like Elton John. This song is out of my range. If I stay on key, I start into a terrible falsetto once the chorus comes around, and that kind of ruins the whole thing. Of course, I could maybe go with that angle since this is, y'know, supposed to be comedy.
The recording: I upped the volume on the piano to match my vocals, but that's neither here nor there. The big issue is that it's very obvious that the vocals and the piano were recorded separately. I've got a noise gate to filter out the sound of my computer, but nothing I do seems to make the vocals sound any better. So I need a better microphone, that's it. Won't happen for a while.
The lyrics: I dunno if this is a good parody or not, honestly. I mean, it's about a guy who REALLY like this huge lizard. That's pretty much it. It's like, "That lizard is really big, dude. Is that funny?" But, it's more meant as an inside joke, so I'm not too concerned about that.
Can't think of anything else. Have some copyright info.

Don't know the original song but I'd say that the biggest problem is focusing your pitches. This will come from more support from the diaphragm. Your pitches are mostly good on the chorus but the verses you get a bit lost as the phrases continue. You start each phrase dead on but slowly skew as it continues. OH WAIT I do know this song, I've only ever heard the chorus though. I even think the rhythms are mostly good, its just about centering the pitch. Don't get discouraged!
Yeah, and I think that goes again into the fact that this song is totally outside my range. :| I do better with pitch when I'm singing where it's supposed to be, until I hit the falsetto parts; here, half a step down, I'm pretty much picking notes out of the air and guessing constantly. An octave lower, and I hit the too low zone.
Maybe I really should try doing it on-key. c.c
