I imagine that this is purely for research purposes in testing the sensitivity to touch and response of the nervous system to various forms of stimulation in various species and that despite appearances Lu and the other aliens are purely professionals and definitely not mischievous.
It's probably also true that the human will get his shoes back when this is over and a sincere apology for any stress incurred during this experience.
