His glasses are Literacy Lenses which are a common item found in scholar guilds which can translate written language into the native language of the wearer. Most are custom for certain core language settings so they can be reused and given away but only to others that read the core languages, but higher grade lenses can have vast lexicons of more obscure or regional dialects put in them.

These specs have to be programmed by fluent readers for a certain length of time before the final glyph is placed to lock in the information and they do not update with linguistic evolution so older lenses tend to fall out of style for active work but are coveted for translating old documents or being added to collections.

No one knows for sure why Lyre has them, if they work, and to what extent, but he refuses to part with them.
