So if you’ve been with me since around the beginning of my account (on instagram which i know like 3 ppl do) you’ll know that I had a really old nightfury OC. I almost never draw her which is probably why most don’t know her but she exists and REALLLLY needed a redesign,, so I went ahead and redesigned her. I even worked out some lore and abilities for the HTTYD AU that she comes from. I’m currently going to refer to it as the “HTTYD Lunaverse” AU or “Lunaverse” unless I find a better name for it.

In the Lunaverse the events of HTTYD3 never happened, however aspects of all 3 movies play a role in the lore building such as the existence of certain dragons introduced by HTTYD3 such as the Lightfury. However, the lightfury is modified to be more aquatic, making them excellent swimmers and mostly cave-dwelling dragons like salamanders rather than reptiles. Toothless and his lightfury do not take part in the AU and neither do their children. However, the concept of cross-breeds and hybrids such as “Duskfuries” and “Dawnfuries” (which replace “Nightlights”) are present.

Grimmel did not kill all the nightfuries. It’s literally impossible for one man to kill an entire species off especially when he has all his facts wrong and I highly doubt this pathetic man had been any further than the small circle of ocean the HTTYD universe takes place in. It’s impossible and not a fact in the AU.

Nightfuries have a set of abilities similar to those shown by the overpowered and “perfect” toothless portrayed in the movie. Yes, they are lightning based and their fast flying speed and agility show off this partnership with the lightning elemental.
They have the standard fire-plasma breath as well as an alternative lightning breath that would be used mostly as a last resort. The skrill-like ability we see Toothless use in THW exists but with a destructive backlash. The ability causes stamina-based damage to the users body and the user exerting past their stamina limit could have very detrimental effects. As the ability is use for long periods of time it causes side effects such as fatigue, weakness, temporary paralysis and/or stunning (or effects similar to being electrocuted). The severity of the side effects depend on how long the user uses the ability. The resistance to their own natural ability is learned slowly. A young nightfury has to train and practice pushing the limits similarly to how you work out to grow muscle. To strengthen your muscle you must rip and tear for it to repair stronger. The better experienced a nightfury is with their ability, the less damage it will do to their body.

All nightfuries and lightfuries have the “alpha” mode glowing that can be triggered down their spines. This luminescent ability is used as a display in multiple categories. It’s used as a display of courtship and mateship. It can also be used threateningly to ward off other dragons in face offs such as territorial disputes. Basically it’s for show, nothing too special about it other than having it used for courting a mate.

Now to Luna, she is a Duskfury, which means that she is mostly nightfury with some lightfury in her. Her appearance mostly resembles a female nightfury with a slender, but sturdy shape. However, due to her lightfury genetics, she stands smaller than the average nightfury, making her a target for attacks. She developed a fierce defensive attitude due to this to cover up her weaknesses. Nightfury and lightfury body structures are altered slightly from the cannon HTTYD designs such as more realistic anatomy and bone structure. Thanks to her nightfury genetics, she has big pointed teeth accompanied by prominent fangs along with her large claws. Her spine has a mix of both spines and fins. Spines are visible on the top of her head but quickly turn into a fin which runs from the beginning to the base of the neck. The fin then becomes spines starting from the base of the neck all the way until the tail bone begins. From there the fin continues down her tail until about halfway before it turns back into spines. The spines then run all the way to the tail tip. Her final prominent features include her wing shape and fins. Her wing shape greatly resembles the standard nightfury wing but with slightly less dip in webbing between each wing finger (kind of halfway between nightfury and lightfury webbing). Her tail fins, however, are more lightfury in design. The fins never truly separate, being connected from the end of the “rear fins” to the beginning of the “tail-tip fins” with a barely noticeable fin membrane that holds closely to her tail. Her “rear fins” shape has a similar notched design as her “tail-tip fins”. Both are about the same size. The underside of her wings and fins are colored with her base body-color grey and the topside colored with a darker-almost black grey. The white markings on her fins are consistent on both the top and underside of her wings and fins. Also her markings are also symmetrical on either side. Her eyes are an icy blue and her paws are a bit thicker and more webbed looking which comes from her lightfury genetics and she has a natural like for water. She is a decent flyer, definitely not the best out there thanks to being a hybrid. However, she is a much better swimmer than her nightfury kin despite preferring being in the air. (Deep water terrifies her and she refuses to swim in it despite being part lightfury and also being a good swimmer). She can not do the lightfury camo so instead she just hides in the dark and mostly blends in if she covers the white markings on her body. She is lacking in the physical strength category but makes up for it with cleverness and caution mixed with her defensive nature.
