Holly moved to Mars thanks to a job offer working in customs and excise. Her friendship with Oscar Wade likely helped secure her visa since Mars is notoriously hard to emigrate to, let alone find a proper job due to ever-increasing automation. Because she is exposed to elevated levels of background radiation up on the Space Lift, Holly works a two week shift, then has two weeks off.
