I used to work at a detail shop years ago and got to work on a lot of these. The construction was perfect. You could even tell just by the simple act of closing a door. It clicked or locked perfectly, unlike an American car which made a loud "clunk" noise.

Yeah, back then german cars were still synonymous with quality. That isn´t really like that anymore unforunately.

That too, its just that they had to outsource production of parts and that cars had become more complex in general in the last decades. More complex machinery means more that can get bust.

I dunno about that. My 2015 ML250 Bluetec SUV is still quite good, I'd argue better than any US-based builder, even though it, too, was built in the USA.

The W123 and R/C107 will do this, too...but I don't know about th later ones. My 1987 560SL does it: it will close and latch with the gentlest of pushes.
