Pretty much so. I remember there was a glut of too many consoles and really bad games from hundreds of companies.
But what I think what really killed off video gaming was the rise of home computers from Commodore, Apple, and Radio Shack's Color-Computer. Once my brother and I got a C-64 in 1983 and saw what kind of games it could play, the old 2600 went in the closet!
