I took this pic in Sudbury, MA, near the famous Wayside Inn. Originally it was in Sterling, MA, a schoolhouse run by a Sarah Hale. One day in 1830, one of her students came to school with her pet lamb. It wasn't a furry lamb, so it made quite a racket! So, the teacher turned him out, but the lamb stuck around until school was over, waiting patiently for Mary to appear. Ms. Hale told her students that since Mary was kind and loving to her pet, it repaid with faithfulness. Eventually, she wrote a poem based on this incident, and it has become one of the most beloved rhymes ever, "Mary Had A Little Lamb"!
