Friends and fans alike ask me why I always draw my battle machines beat up and damaged. The simple answer is that "War is Hell," and these machines take a terrible pounding in action. Besides, for me, drawing a battle ravaged war machine is far more visually interesting than drawing a slick, clean "Museum Piece." Here I went all out showing a young, exhausted soldier slumping from his machine after seeing action in an extended firefight with other machines of the same class. I've been told being in armored battle is kind of like sitting in a hot 55 Gallon oil drum while big men slam the outside with sledgehammers.

This normal usage damage is part of what makes your machines so fantastically believable. As one who works on *alot* of machinery in most every form, I appreciate the look. No machine remains factroy new for long, and even museum pieces, when you get close, are far from new looking. It's nice to see off-screen use reguarded so nicely. :)
Being in a tank is like sitting in a hot drum with people banging on it.
With the increased power requirements and greater range of available motion that comes with a walker-type? I'd hazard the guess that it's like being strapped inside a clothes dryer.
Losing your footing or getting knocked down is something tanks generally don't have to deal with, thankfully.

One of my friends in the Army used to drive M-60 A1s and M-113 APCs. He also told me about the "Oil Drum" scenario as well. It's always stuck with me, even through to my scale model Armor building. Treads Vs. Feet... We should discuss that idea in detail some time. (Personally I prefer treads and wheels over feet.)
