OOF, now this was a project a long time in the making.
Long story short, over the years I've made a coyote yarn tail, paw slippers, and eventually hand paws. The tail I just wanted, the paw slippers were for fun as house slippers, and then I made the hand paws to match just because I'd never tried it before. I ended up using them for a dog costume on Halloween too.
Since I already had all the other pieces, I decided I may as well try my hand at making a mask to match. Since I'd already done a "realistic" styled mask for a werewolf costume in college, I decided for something new, I'd go the route of designing a cartoony character. I didn't really have a lot in mind when I started, so this guy was sort of created on the fly. He's a folk-punk asshole called Caldera, who lives to drink and dumpster dive. Your prototypical gross scrappy coyote. He'll eat your leftovers, your trash, your cat. He hates cops and showers.
I've never really considered myself a furry so much as a wildlife and costuming enthusiast, but once I got the idea of this challenge in my mind, I had to see it out to its end. Since this is my first real try at a "toon" styled mask, it's hard not to just see my errors, but I guess I'm satisfied just to see that he doesn't look like one of those blank-staring carpet monsters.
It was hard keeping up the motivation for this project, because I didn't have specific plans to use the mask! Usually I'm excited for a Ren faire or Halloween or some event, and that eagerness helps me push through the difficulty of building a costume. This time I had no planned usage, so it took me almost a YEAR to actually get around to finishing him. He's been sitting on the FLOOR OF MY BEDROOM all this time, because I have no work table and have to squat on the floor like a goddamn goblin to craft.
ANYWAY, he's done now and I guess maybe I'm now obligated to actually wear him somewhere? Help, I've gone too far.
(100% hand-make from scratch by me).
