I started having problems with one of the hard drives on my old computer which uses an 5 year old Abit AN7 motherboard. I replaced the hard drive but
spatsbear mentioned on my LJ to check the capacitors... so glad I did! The ones next to the CPU are starting to bulge bad and need to be replaced.
The motherboard still works fine but for how long? If you have a old computer made in the early-mid 2000's be sure to check your motherboard for this problem. Today I bought new parts for to build a new computer and will replace this one. It's an outdated and slow design anyway.

That's what I read, and the bad caps also wound up in televisions and other electronic equipment too.
Abit had a great rep in the early-mid 2000's but then they had financial or production problems, cut corners, and aren't the same company they used to be. It's not often a computer part lasts for 6 years. At least I caught it before it blew up and destroyed other components.

Haha, had the same problem on my Athlon XP back in 2007. Wound up selling the parts for about $150 and put the proceeds towards building the nice, slick beast of an Athlon 64 X2 machine that I'm using today.
I sure don't miss the overheating and the slow load times from my previous PC. ;)

I need to junk all these IDE and AthlonXP parts, but I got a bunch of them dating back to an Athlon 750 I bought in 2000.
I have a couple of 1200's, Duron 1300, and a couple of 2000's and 2200's
I have an newer ASrock KT600 board I'm going to swap the Abit and XP3000 out with and make a new backup PC.
