Down a Dark Alley (by SleepyKnight)

I had hoped to move on from this city by the afternoon, but the sky had already grown dark by the time the smith had finished up with my sword. Still, I couldn't be too annoyed - good work took time, after all, and she had done some very good work indeed, the edge feeling as sharp as the day it was forged, perhaps sharper. I had seen her finish up with the work, imbuing the blade with some type of forge magic that perhaps had restored its edge. It still weighed heavy in my claw, but that was good. I liked heavy. It let me really feel the weight behind every strike.
Oof...!
My thoughts were knocked out of my head by something - someone - colliding with me in the street, a hand heavy on my chest. I growled softly - perhaps a little agitated at my forced delay - but before I could snap, a human face looked up at me. A man. Panicked and wild.
"S-slow down, little human," I said, attempting to keep my voice steady. Whatever was causing the man such distress, adding my own annoyance would hardly de-escalate the situation.
"You have to help me!" he said, barely having heard me. "There's a cult after me, and..."
"Well well. Another dragon." Another voice came from the shadows behind the man. A voice at once tinged with the flame of arrogance, while also causing my blood to run cold. "I won't say no to collecting the blood from the both of you." Immediately, my hand went to the hilt of my sword as the creature strode out of the cover of darkness. A tiger - at first glance. But there was something else. Something not quite natural about the creature. No tiger I had ever seen. The human quickly grab hold of my arm and turned to take cover under my sheltering wing. A gleam of moonlight shone off the metal blade that the creature now drew - a small, rather plain-looking knife. I couldn't help but smile a little to myself. Some foolish mugger that had gotten in way over his head - that little knife would barely be a match for my claws, let alone my reforged sword.
"Don't worry, little human," I said as I barred him with an arm across his waist, letting him take comforting hold of my shoulder as I drew my sword. "I'm Arix, and I'll protect you." My smile became a threatening scowl, my wings flaring out slightly as I turned my attention to the thief. "As for you, cur, get out of my sight before you force my hand!" I had no intention to spill blood - at least not too much. A simple mugger didn't deserve to be struck down in the street. But I also had no intention of leaving the man to his fate.
To my slight surprise, however, the thief did not turn away, instead hissing aggressively back at me. Come to think of it, why was a street mugger so well dressed...?
"This should be interesting," it said, as it continued to stride towards me, knife held out...

Indeed, but not all thieves are willing to go all the way to murder. Some just hope to intimidate their victims into doing what they say. I, as you may surmise, am not so easily intimidated.
And thank you so much! I have been getting more and more serious about my writing lately, and this is a great way to practice. I do try my best every time, be it a full story or a couple of short sentences. Of course, the credit for much of this piece goes to Dan_Aers, since he originally wrote it up when he submitted this piece on his page. I just rewrote it from Arix's perspective.
