This is me at an open mic night. The song is by the Decemberists. This is pretty far into the night, so my voice is starting to get shot. Hope you all like it.
If you do, I can post more from the same night, if anyone's interested. Let me know = 3

If I may make a suggestion? Talk, don't sing. You've got an incredible amount of talent with your voice, but you've run into the same roadblock I hit a few years back: In attempting to sing, you naturally bring more air through your nose than is natural, creating the somewhat 'nasal' tone heard in that song. My music teacher back at college--some guy with an insane resume--wound up working around this issue by having me "tone-talk" all my songs for a month, and gradually had me transition into holding the notes longer. You might also find that you'll drop an octave as a result. Give it a shot; unlike me, you actually have vocal talent worth working on. *giggle*
Well, being as he is impersonating a singer that is really rather nasal, it makes sense that his voice would come out sounding nasal. Colin Melloy has a very unique voice, and if you were familiar with the music, you would know that.
So, while I think that your advice might have been useful in some ways, I don't think that the way you phrased it was very constructive. So, maybe think a little more before giving critisism.

Not to mention that the only other recording I have of you is from like, three years ago, during a "Meh, I'm bored, so I'll record stuff with a $3 mic in an empty dorm room" bout. I must give you credit, your performance at FC'06 of "Serenade by the ATM" was phenomenal. *giggle*
Judging by The Decemberists apperance on many critical best of lists this year, I'd imagine Colin Meloy is probably glad he didn't have your music teacher. :) You should hear the orginal song.
It's just my opinion, but I personally believe music courses, and art courses, in college squash potential individuality in favor of cookie cutter technique. Just my two cents.

Agreed, and agreed. I got the same feeling from the class I took, and as such, never got so far as to take the "personal style development" courses. The intro classes were to teach the fundamental stuff, in which any "style" one had developed was consequently stripped away in favor of building a strong foundation, much like is commonly done in the Martial Arts world.
...And to steal (and subsequently butcher) a line from Steven Wright: You've put your two sense in, but I'm only gonna give you a penny for your thoughts. Yay for 100% markup. *giggle*

I love that you sing on the consonant. It's a sign of someone who cares more about the story than the voice.
I love your voice, too. *Giggles.* Still, if there is one good thing I took away from college, it is that singing on the vowel sounds annoying, and doesn't get good sound out.
