[OA] Cartel Starborne; Old Fursona
OA = Old Art. Applies to all of my artwork pre-dating 2020. You can tell if it's OA because my signature is still Cartel.

Reposting a little bit of old art that I'm particularly proud of and/or that I'm interested in re-drawing.
This is Cartel Starborne, the third incarnation of my fursona (Wei and Quon were the first two respectively, and is thus arguably my current sona's (Ashcraft's) elder brother. Cartel is a yokai hybrid of all my favorite animals: Tiger, Unicorn, Peacock, and Sea Turtle.
His primary base was clearly a tiger, though had I colored it, he wouldn't have been in regular tiger colors. Instead he would have had a lot of peacock inspiration to his coloration to couple the peacock patterns on his tail and ears. The unicorn is the most subtle, as it really only showed in the shape of his ears and tail, save for the crown of horns he wears. This crown of horns is additionally a part of the yokai in him, as is the staple of all of my fursonas - his black, forked tongue. The turtle was admittedly the most difficult to incorporate and save for the scales on his elbows and head, you don't really see the peace de la resistance so allow me to explain: There's a turtle shell on his lower back at the base of his tiger/unicorn tail, giving him a place to retract and protect his feathers or curl up and relax his tiger/unicorn tail, depending on which one he prefers to display (though he can have both out if he likes, just not both in). It looks as though is made of stained glass, but it's really made of gemstones and scales. I never connected with Cartel (much like I failed to connect with Wei and Quon) the way I feel I should with my fursona, so I replaced him with Ashcraft. I still absolutely love him and a long-term, maybe 5 year goal or something, is that my best friend
HelixDragonSong and I could one day make a beautiful suit of him to display in my home and wear only once to take photos XD
I'm very proud of the piece itself, but the mistake I made that I think ruined my chances of connecting with this character because even though I made him into everything I aspire and dream I could be, but his body type is completely and totally impossible for me to achieve lmao He's huge, muscular, got massive paws, and tall af. Meanwhile, I'm 5'3" and a cubby transdude haha
Ash is still a little WIP, but I'll share him when he's complete! c:
