They definitely got off on the wrong paw with Zakuro.
She started it, to be fair, with the whole cursing-them-into-a-wild-animal thing.
It was not a fun few days, being left alone in a concrete jungle, having to sleep in a drainage pipe and beg for scraps behind the Casey's.
The kitsune only really became convinced of their innocence after seeing the store carry on operations as though they hadn't even gone missing.
That was a blow to the fox's pride...

Zakuro's guilt at cursing the "wrong" person quickly sublimated into anger.
To think that a human would destroy her shrine, and then... leave a complete patsy in its place to take the blame, to receive her wrath instead?
Such fecklessness had to be the work of a supreme coward, or a diabolical villain!
It would take a few weeks to convince Zakuro that that was standard operating procedure under capitalism.

Their curse was not something Zakuro could quickly undo. While she did rescue some texts from her shrine's destruction, cursebreaking would have to rely on her memory and experimentation. But she could at least make the former human more comfortable in the meantime.
She showed the fox the abandoned metal cart in a ditch she had been using for shelter. After restoring their speech, they were able to teach her that it was a van, capable of pulling itself.
...They probably should have expected that she would use that knowledge to begin plotting a roadtrip to find the "rulers of Home Depot". But they convinced her to teach them basic self-illusions before she set off on any sort of crusade.
