I’m not sure when I can get to this information (because Marigold doesn’t know and Ava doesn’t talk), but Ava’s backstory isn’t quite as tragic as some others. She was a caregiver to the old couple that lived there before Marigold. Because she was their primary caregiver, they were actually pretty affectionate toward her. Unfortunately, she started breaking down at about the same time that they needed to go into long-term care and the family didn’t realize that she was in the garden.
There might be some flashbacks later, but for now, Ava is probably one of the happiest and best-adjusted characters introduced. XD;;
