Part 1, The Vacation

Kat found himself in the middle of a dark and misty battlefield, he was severely injured, and struggling to get up, upon looking around, what he saw shook him, the bloody bodies of his allies were strewn all around him, Doggie Cruger, James P. Sullivan, Jon Talbain, and Leomon, all of them with cuts, bruises, and broken armor or damaged clothing. Kat couldn’t believe his eyes, he couldn’t even remember how the fight began, let alone his friends being killed, he simply stood where he was, trembling and holding back tears. Kat didn’t have very long to grieve before he saw a man appear before him, he wore a ranger outfit like Doggie, but it was very different in terms of design, his outfit was mostly white, but he had a green and gold piece of armor on his chest which had a strange symbol on it, and his helmet had a red visor, as well as gold details in the shape of a dragon head with tiger stripes,
“It didn’t have to come to this, you should’ve just given me your power coin” the man said casually,
“What are you talking about?! Who are you?!” Kat demanded as he yelled and held back tears,
“I am Lord Drakkon, you were foolish to think you could take on the mantle of the green ranger, friends are nothing but a liability, they won’t be there for you in your time of need, but you especially don’t need them if you’re a green ranger, you should be strong enough on your own” Drakkon explained emotionlessly. Kat then furiously took a kunai from one of his vortexes,
“You bastard, I’ll kill you!!” Kat threatened,
“You’ll die trying” Drakkon replied casually, taking out a strange weapon that looked like a cross between a dagger and a flute. Kat and Drakkon fought for a minute, and Kat found that despite his trained speed and reflexes, he couldn’t keep up with the strange malicious ranger, and it wasn’t long before Drakkon had Kat back on the ground. Kat struggled to get up once again as Drakkon casually walked behind him readying his dagger, when Kat was on his knees, Drakkon tried stabbing into his back, though within the moment it took Drakkon to swing his dagger, Kat’s remaining ally, Panthro, got between them, and wrapped his arms around Kat protectively as he took the stab for him, Kat could hear his heart momentarily stop when he heard his partner’s cry of pain. Drakkon took his dagger out of Panthro’s back, it undoubtedly hit a fatal spot, so Drakkon walked a few steps away from Kat, deciding he’d allow him to see his greatest ally die right next to him, to completely crush his spirit, before killing Kat next. Panthro trembled, as he held onto Kat, who was also trembling as he understood the gravity of the situation, Panthro, with some of the last of his strength, very gently let Kat go, and laid down beside the kneeling Kat, Panthro and Kat looked into each others eyes for a while, neither was sure what to say, there was so much they wanted to tell each other after all the adventures they had gone through together, the trials they faced, the friendship they forged, while Kat cared very deeply about all of his allies, and was devastated by all of their deaths, Panthro was the one who brought him into his group, the one who always fought by his side when he could, over time Kat developed feelings for him, and they had only recently started dating, he was his partner, and seeing him slowly lose his life before Kat’s very eyes somehow hit him much harder. Kat couldn’t hold back his tears anymore, they streamed down his face as he tried to find the right words to say to Panthro in his state,
“Panthro… I’m sorry, I wasn’t-” Kat attempted to explain with his painfully dry throat, he could barely even see Panthro anymore with his tears clouding his vision, though he did hear Panthro’s familiar deep voice weakly call out to him,
“K-Kat…”, Kat wiped his eyes to better see Panthro, for the first time ever, Kat could see Panthro crying, and he also had his large arm extended to Kat with his hand into a fist, Kat knew what he wanted, and with a heavy heart, pressed his fist against Panthro’s, causing Panthro to smile,
“Kat… thank you, I’m glad I met you, you’re one of… the finest….. Friends I’ve……..” Panthro tried explaining, but alas, he spent the last of his strength, and couldn’t even finish one last sentence before passing away. Panthro’s arm fell to the ground lifelessly, and Kat began crying like mad, still processing that his best friend had just died, while Kat was in his state of shock, Drakkon walked back over to him,
“I guess he was there when you needed him, but not now, never again, but don’t worry, you’ll be joining him in just a moment” Drakkon explained as he got out his dagger, Kat didn’t have the strength to fight anymore,
“Kat, I’m about to strike you down, look at me, I want to see your devastated expression when I do” Drakkon commanded, but Kat, though emotionally devastated, refused to at the very least give Drakkon the satisfaction of looking into his eyes when he killed him, Drakkon grabbed Kat’s hair and tried forcing his head up, but Kat still struggled to the best of his ability,
“Kat! Look up at me! Kat! Kat!! Kat!!!” Drakkon demanded, continuing to repeat Kat’s name.

After hearing his name from Drakkon a few times, he actually heard his name being called by his ally Doggie, Kat slowly opened his eyes, to find that he was on a medical bed in the infirmary of the Anthros of Justice base, he saw all of his allies standing around him, including Panthro, everyone was alive and well, Doggie had his hand on Kat’s head, though he didn’t have him by his hair, it was just a nightmare. Kat found that his entire body was covered in cold sweat, and all his friends were looking at him concerned,
“Kat… are you ok?” Doggie asked, taking his hand off Kat’s head,
“Yeah, I’m fine” Kat replied,
“Are you sure? You looked like you were having one hell of a dream” Panthro explained,
“You kept tossing and turning” Sulley added,
“You were even crying”, Jon added, pointing at Kat’s face, Kat sat up, and wiped his face with his gloved hand,
“I’m fine… I just had a pretty vivid pretty nightmare”, Kat explained,
“Why am I in the infirmary though? Do I need surgery or something?” Kat asked,
“Nope! All your vitals are doing just fine, though it would do you some good to take some time off missions” Winston explained, he was on the other side of the room on his computer,
“What do you mean?” Kat inquired,
“Kat, earlier we were on a mission, and you just… collapsed!” Doggie explained,
“...what?” Kat inquired, not sure if he heard Doggie right,
“You collapsed Kat, like you fell to the ground like a sack of potatoes” Leomon explained,
“But how can that be?” Kat asked,
“Well, none of us are medical experts, not even the monk- er scientist in the room, but it’s likely that you’re overworking yourself” Jon suggested,
“That’s absurd, I feel fine” Kat replied,
“Kat when was the last time you got some sleep?.. Before a few moments ago I mean” Doggie asked, Kat pondered for a moment,
“Uh……………. I don’t remember” Kat explained, all the anthros around him groaned and facepalmed,
"H-hey! From what I learned, I can go a long time without sleep if I absorb darkness!" Kat argued defensively,
“Kat, you have to take better care of yourself, you’re an anthro but like any anthro you need sleep and rest, even if you can sustain yourself with darkness” Panthro explained,
“Please, I was specially trained to go on missions during the night” Kat assured the rest of the anthros with a confident tone,
“And what do you do during the day time?” Sulley asked,
“Uh… go on missions”, Kat replied sheepishly, causing everyone to sigh,,
“Thought so, Kat… you’re overworking yourself, which is why we all decided that you need to take a vacation” Panthro explained,
“A vacation? I don’t need a vacation, I’m fine!” Kat replied dismissively,
“YOU COLLAPSED OUT OF EXHAUSTION EARLIER!!!” everyone but Kat shouted in unison, startling the hybrid,
“It’s not a suggestion, it’s an order, for the good of your physical and mental health, I’m having you take a mandatory vacation” Panthro explained. Kat sighed as he couldn’t think of an argument,
“Fine, I’ll stay back at the base, and do some reading I guess” Kat replied with a shrug,
“Not quite”, Doggie replied, causing Kat to tilt his head,
“What do you mean?” Kat inquired,
“We mean, we’re actually gonna send you to a more relaxing environment to help you unwind” Panthro explained,
“That, and if you stay, you’d likely just sneak away to do missions without us knowing” Jon commented,
‘that sounds like something I’d do, these guys know me too well’ Kat thought to himself,
“You’re gonna take a plane through one of the gates of light that leads to different worlds, through this gate, you'll find an alternate version of earth, though more specifically, you’re going to Hawaii, it’s a nice quiet tropical island, you’ll love it” Doggie explained,
“Though one more thing” Panthro explained,
“What now?” Kat asked,
“We decided to send someone with you to make sure you’re actually taking a vacation” Panthro explained,
“And here I thought you trusted me” Kat commented,
“We do trust you Kat, but it helps to be sure, besides, I could use a bit of a vacation too” Sulley explained,
“Sulley? You’re coming with me?” Kat asked,
“Yep, is that ok?” Sulley asked,
“I mean, I guess I don’t have much of a choice in the matter” Kat replied with a shrug,
“Great, your flight leaves tomorrow, be sure to have your bags packed by tonight” Doggie instructed, before he and the rest of the anthros left Kat in the infirmary before Kat sighed.

Later that night Kat was finishing up packing his bag, his friend Kuriboh floated beside him as he was deciding what else to put in the bag, Kat didn’t remember seeing Kuriboh in his nightmare, though he decided that was for the best given what happened, thinking back to the nightmare saddened Kat,
“Kuri Kuri?” Kuriboh inquired,
“I’m going on a Hawaiian vacation with Sulley”, Kat explained,
“Kuri Kuri” Kuriboh commented,
“Well it’s mandatory, I was ordered to” Kat explained,
“Kuri Kuri?” Kuriboh asked,
“No you can’t come Kuriboh” Kat replied, putting one of his books in his bag,
“Kuri Kuri?” Kuriboh asked,
“Because, you’re like the mascot of the anthros of justice, if they don’t have me, you and Sulley around, the team just isn’t going to work” Kat explained. Kuriboh thought about it for a moment, then asked while twiddling his thumbs-
“Kuri Kuri?”, Kat sighed,
“Yeah, I’ll try and bring you back a souvenir” Kat replied, causing Kuriboh to beam happily,
“Kuri Kuri”, said Kuriboh before reverting back to his card form, and resting on Kat’s nightstand. Kat was just about done packing his bag when he heard a knock at his door,
“Kat? Do you have your bags packed?” Panthro asked through the door,
“Yeah…” Kat replied,
“Do you mind if I come in?” Panthro asked,
“No…” Kat replied. Panthro came into Kat’s room, closing the door behind him, Kat didn’t make eye contact with him, and instead looked down at his bag,
“Kat, how are you doing?” Panthro asked,
“Fine…” Kat replied,
“It doesn’t seem like you’re fine… are you still thinking about your nightmare?” Panthro asked, Kat said nothing though casually swung his tail and continued looking at his bag, Panthro sighed, moved closer, and bent down slightly so he was at eye level with Kat, before he reached out to put his hand on his shoulder,
“Kat, if something is bothering you-” Panthro tried saying, but he was cut off by Kat turning around, and carefully wrapping his arms around Panthro to hug him, which caught Panthro off guard,
“Kat?” Panthro inquired, though after a moment, he put his large arms around Kat, reminding the hybrid of when Panthro had his arms around him in the dream,
“Panthro… in my nightmare.. All of you died… you were all brutally killed by this guy named Drakkon” Kat explained as he trembled,
“Hey now, it was just a dream, we’re all ok” Panthro explained as he rubbed Kat’s back comfortingly,
“But what if it’s not just a dream? What if my connection to my dark magic is telling me of a future event?” Kat asked,
“You’ve thought about this… that nightmare must’ve really affected you…” Panthro commented, still holding Kat,
“Panthro… I know I act tough, like I always know what to do, and nothing ever gets to me, but deep down… one of my biggest fears.. Is losing you guys.. I don’t have a lot of people in my life, but you guys, you’re like family to me, I…. I…….” Kat tried explaining, but he couldn’t quite find the words to say, Panthro gave a comforting smile, and put his large hand on Kat’s head,
“Kat, it’s ok, I know how you feel…” Panthro explained, causing Kat to look at Panthro with surprise,
“You do?” Kat asked,
“Of course, I’m the leader of the anthros, you think I’ve never thought about if a mission were to go wrong, or if one of our teammates were to die? I think about it all the time….” Panthro explained with a somber tone,
“How do you cope with it?”, Kat asked,
“Well, I help my team to the best of my ability, but if there isn’t anything I can do to help them physically, I remember all we’ve been through, and have faith in them to pull though” Panthro explained, Panthro’s explanation caused Drakkon’s words from his dream to echo in his mind,
“friends are nothing but a liability, they won’t be there for you in your time of need”, and Kat remembered that even in his dream Panthro was there for him when he needed him most. Kat held Panthro tightly,
“Panthro.. Thanks for everything, you’ve been an amazing friend, even in my dreams you’re always there for me” Kat explained, Panthro couldn’t help but smile at Kat’s naive nature that shined through in casual moments like these, Panthro patted his head,
“Hey, what are partners for kitten? And uh… truthfully I’ve considered you to be like family as well” Panthro explained. The two held each other for just a moment longer, before Kat finally let go of Panthro, and Panthro did the same, Kat was happy to get all the troubling information off his chest,
“Are you going to be able to sleep tonight?” Panthro asked,
“I’ll try” Kat replied,
“Alright, well I hope you have much better dreams, especially since you’re supposed to be taking it easy these next few days” Panthro commented,
“Me too…” Kat replied,
“Don’t worry Kat, we’re partners, we’re always close to each other in spirit, but if you really need me, I’ll rush to your side to help you” Panthro explained, going back to Kat’s door,
“Good night Kat” said Panthro on his way out,
“Good night Panthro”, Kat replied, soon after Panthro left, Kat turned off his lights, and got into his bed, not long after he fell asleep, though the dream he had that night was much more pleasant, it was a seemingly endless loop of Panthro fixing his thundertank, while Kat read a book not too far from him, occasionally handing him a tool he needed, since the tools were right beside Kat, as boring as it seemed, Kat wouldn’t mind if the dream lasted forever given how peaceful it was.

The next day Kat was at the airport with Sulley, who was looking at a map of the airport to find the best route to their plane. Not long after they left the lobby, they could see Panthro and Doggie approach them from behind,
“Hm? Are you guys coming with us?”, Kat asked,
“Nah, we just want to make sure you two don't get attacked at the airport” Panthro explained,
“Won't security give you guys hell for having your weapons on you?” Kat asked while whispering,
“Nope, that's the perks of being a registered hero and having a license” Doggie explained,
“We appreciate the concern guys, but uh… hey Panthro can you help me figure out this map?” Sulley's requested,
“Hm? Sure let me see…”, Panthro replied, looking at the map over Sulley's shoulder, and walking close to him trying to make sense of the map himself. Kat and Doggie walked beside each other,
“Say Doggie, can I ask you something?” Kat asked,
“What is it?” Doggie inquired,
“Has there ever been a ranger named Drakkon?” Kat asked,
“Drakkon?” Doggie inquired,
“Yeah, he looks like a mix between the green and white rangers on the mighty Morphin power rangers team”, Kat explained,
“Well coincidentally both the green and white rangers are the same person, Tommy Oliver, just at different points in his life, but no, I can't say I've ever seen anyone like that in the ranger archives… did you see Drakkon in your nightmare yesterday?” Doggie asked,
“Yeah…” Kat replied,
“Thought so, perhaps Drakkon is like your fear and anxieties given form within your subconscious?” Doggie suggested,
“My fear and anxieties take the form of a power ranger?” Kat asked skeptically,
“Perhaps, dreams are odd, there are a number of meanings a dream can have, but for now try not to dwell on it and enjoy your vacation” Doggie suggested, Kat sighed, and Doggie patted Kat's head,
“Hey, you should feel lucky, we have to work while you get to take it easy” Doggie explained encouragingly,
“I guess so…” Kat replied, as they continued making their way to the plane.

After just a bit of searching, and going through airport security, Kat and Sulley were on their plane with time to spare, said time passed by fairly quickly before their plane took off, and they were on their way to their Hawaiian vacation away from their usual adventures. Little did Kat know at the time, that on a different plane was another hybrid who'd join them for their vacation.
