Large mythical beasts said to only intervene when the deserts Tel'Mushriq are desecrated. The Sphinxes tower over many creatures and are said to possess incredible strength both physically and magically.
Their large wings allow swift travel through the air and can also be used as a weapon, no matter how fast their prey is they will catch them. However, the sphinx are not without mercy for they how an inherit love of riddles, if their prey successfully answers 3 riddles with no failures then they will spare them. Often seen as gods among the Centaurs of Al-Mihran they are worshiped over the goddess Asteria and tribute is offered to them at shrines and temples. It is said their tail feathers bring good fortune to those who find them.
In old legends it is said the fabled warrior Argon struck down a sphinx on his march against the gods, it is also rumoured he had a cloak fashioned from its hide and an axe made of its bones.
In Centaur religion the desert is sacred and the Sphinxes look down upon them, blessing them with luck, fertility and peace while warding off darkness and bad omens, it is also written in old tales that the centaur races itself is descended from the Sphinx.
In folklore the race is said to be solely females, empowering the ideals of female Al-Mihran centaurs to become warriors in order to appease their deities. An annual festival is held across the continent of Tel'Mushriq to honour them, where messages attached to paper lanterns are sent up into the heavens to be read by these creatures. Their figure can often be seen on jewellary from the region.
