[[NOT MY ART]]Test Your (Spell) Might!
What exactly is a spell? Is it the arcane words of power muttered hurriedly under one's breath? Is it the obscure and complex gestures with one's hands and arms? Is it the Mana manifested by the caster into one's will? The simple answer is that a spell is all of these, and so much more. Spellcasting is as much an exact science as it is an art. For example, most established spells are repeatable experiments that have been developed by archmages of old, whose names have been forgotten to time. Magic Missile, Lightning Bolt, Fireball -- all of these spells were once esoteric and not widely known, and each one likely took months of research, fine-tuning and tinkering to get the formulas, words and Mana Yield1 just right.
Just because a spell has been established and widely used, however, doesn't mean that it cannot be altered. Every mage is encouraged to add a personal touch to his or her favorite spells. Change a spell's natural shape, the color it gives off, or even how it behaves! Mages are also encouraged to push a spell to its absolute limits: tweaking the Mana Yield, words of power or formulas and gestures is generally never advised unless one completely understands a spell, but such experimentation can lead to fantastic, if not unpredictable, results!
1: Mana Yield is the amount of mana required to fuel a spell, as well as the toll of channeling that mana on the caster's body. A spell with a high Mana Yield can be utterly exhausting to cast repeatedly, and can even take the life of the caster should it be used too often.

Here we have Danathius trying to push the limits of a shield spell! How helpful of Kherrox to aid the mage in his endeavor! Of course, Danathius's concentration isn't entirely focused; seems he's rather pleased with the sight of the draygas's sole smothering him from above...

As
Leo321 mentioned, Kherrox is plantigrade -- he's just using the ball of his foot to press down on Danathius. Best part of the foot, in my opinion. ;D
I'm a plantigrade man through and through.
