Originally built as a fortress in the year 1190, the building was subsequently rebuilt and expanded over the next eight centuries into the enormous palace we see today. First converted into a museum during the French Revolution, the Louvre today houses an expansive collection of paintings, sculptures, and furnishings. The Grande Galerie, displaying many of the collection’s Italian paintings, is perhaps the most famous room in the building.
